landed downwind at Wunstorf and overran r'way Cat 4, liaison visit to Bremen Airport as
Jever emergency divbersion, B50Ds intercepted, Battle Flt.
April 1952 - Raid on UK, flypast for Eisenhower, Vampire flew into the ground on mock bridge attack.
May 1952 - 2 weeks training at DUXFORD; French exchange pilot killed; 4 new pilots arrived.
June 1952 - Armament Practice Camp at Sylt.
July 1952 - Armament Practice Camp at Sylt, Tempest towing problems, average 5.2%, SLt Richard and Sgt Lavoine, FAF attached for 3 months., NATO Air Show flypast Brussels, Battle Flt., near miss with 36 Meteors, R/P, deployed under canvas to Wildenwrath for Ex Spearhead One.

January 1953 - Rocket and air/grd at Meppen, Battle Flt, Radio Bremen on GCI frequemcy, Smith and
Swart joine Sqn, Ex Barrage Brussels and The Hague, bad weather, clered hangar to 112
Sqn for Boxing, dinghy drill in Oldenburg toen pool,112 Sqn moved to Butzweilerhof, flt
leader returned to base with anoxia, CFE visit.
February 1953 - R/P and air/grd rehearsal for Gutersloh demo. Snow, Bad weather, 18 days no flying,
taxying accident, Battle Flt, mobility exercise move to 112 Hangar for 2TAF boxing
championships, End of 1st Year at Jever.
March 1953 - Fog, Prom. Exams, Ex Silver Fox, Battle Flt., Ex Barrage, Ex Jungle King, Fly past at
Wunstorf for Duke of Edinburgh, air to grd at Meppen, Lack lost RPM, CinC visit, STI
grounded Vampires - mass balance problems.
April 1953 - Battle Flt., R/P Gutersloh for CAS, A Flt to Treviso for Ex Betfor Trust, fuel systems
flushed because of jamming barostats, Giffin car broke down on way back from leave, Ex
April Showers, Army AA Battery suport at Ahlhorn to test use of radar, R/P, Wade and
Withington joined Sqn., more Barostat faikures, cine resdy for Sylt, Lord Tedder visited
station, hrs target reached early.
May 1953 - Cine and parallel quarter atack practice started for Sylt, some air to ground, low level
strikes in low flying area, Battle Flight interceptions and gun emplacement attacks at low
level, night flying, several Battle Flights joined up to defend against a squadron of
Vampires, AMP visited, moved to Sylt and began firing programme, gyro versus fixed sight
controversy, squadron average 8.3%, CO scored 32% and 40% using the fixed sight, 9
Vampires to Gutersloh for Coronation flypast.
June 1953 - Coronation flypast over Jamburg, 2 Vampires collide on the flag but returned safely,
Duncan Trophy average reached 11.8%, but slumped to 8.4% in the end, returned to
Jever on 16th, Meppen Range air to ground, Station sports day, new readiness times for
Battle Flight, practicing for rocket demonstration in UK next month, Collins left Vasey
took over flight, Simms arrived.
July 1953 - RP practice for UK demo, hot weather burn out of brakes, RP team to West Raynham, CFE
lectures for rest, Battle Flt, grd attack at Meppen, Simms sank on to runway during take-
off, pilots practiced re-arming and r-fuelling, move to Wahn for Exercise Coronet, Wade
to UK, F-80s over Jever, dispersed at Wahn under camouflage, Ex Coronet, grd defence
exercise, Australian Wing entertained, returned to Jever.
August 1953 - New pilots Mitchell, Richardson and Gray, Simms rechecked in Meteor, new CO S/L Gilpin
arrived, Battle Flt, Rx Momentum raids on UK, RP and AG om Meppen, moved to 4 Hangar,
S/L Gilpon and Williamson dined in and out, night flying, Hancock joined sqn, Bridson back
from Uxbridge training for standard bearing.
September 1953 - A/c shortage due to servicing, Dinghy drill, Battle Flt., A/G Meppen, practice flypasts for
AOCs, AOC's inspection, started cine for Sylt, night flying against army searchlights,
erected tents and camouflage for Ex Grand Repulse, armed recce on Ex, switched sides
against bridgehead, strict safety measures, Battle Flt against Ahlhorn, cine for Sylt, Lack
departed, Willians arrived, failed to get traget hrs due to servicing backlog.
October 1953 - Jack arrived, lectures onstead of flying due to bed weather, Battle Flt, cine for Sylt, CFS
Exam Wg flew with pilots, to Sylt, started with cine, bed weather stopped flying, lectures
and harmonisation, visited 3 Sqn and learnt about Sabres, Skeet shooting because there
was no flying, more bad weather, Evasion exercise.
November 1953 - Bad weather continued to disrupt Sylt firing, Swart to UK for Course, returned to Jever,
Sanders u/c up on T/O, began parade rehearsals for Styanard presentation, MRAF Sir
John Slessor presented Sqn Standard, Battle Flt., Vampire T.11 collected, barostat
failures, missed flying target./A>
December 1953 - Flew airmen in Tiger Moth, fog, Richardson engine fire and baled out, 2TAF Boxing
Championships at Jever, Battle Flt, Christmas Break, Stacey crashed and killed on cross
country, low temperatures, dod not reach flying hours target.

- Snow and ice, Funeral of P/O Derek Stacey in Hamburg, Battle Flt, RP and air/ground at
Meppen, Dinghy drill at Oldenburg swimming bath, flew on Sunday, 19 Sqn diverted to
Ahlhorn, Dougie Bridson flame out landing at Jever, GCI visit, BAOR tour with drop tanks
on, achieved flying target and stood down early.
February 1954
- Battle Flight, Sabre forced lands at Jever, Parade for presentation of Duncan Trophy to
93 Sqn, W/C Coulson posted, Pete Gilpin to Oldenburg for Board of Inquiry on Meteor 7
accident, lectures on Sabre gunsight, air to ground, Sir Harry Broadhurst presents
Duncan Trophy to 93 Sqn, Dave Clayton forced wheels up landing, Meteor 7 borrowed
from Fassberg has turbine failure, poor weather, Anson forced lands near Jever.
March 1954
- 16 to Wildenrath for Sabre Conversion Course, 2 days of lectures on Sabre, remaining,
Vampires to Ahlhorn whilst Jever runway surface prepared for Sabre ops, new bone-
domes and G suits issued, practice Sabre starts, sensitive nose-wheel steering, Peter
Gilpin and Eric Hughes 1st Sabre solos, F/L Blair ran off end of Jever runway delivering
Sabre but no damage, RP at Jever for Vampires, more Vampires back to UK, Gilpin and
Hughes completed 7 conversion sorties of 6 hrs, Radio Compass a challenge and stopping
by 2,000 yd point at Wildenrath, SASO G/C Donaldson visited Jever, 2nd half of Sqn to
Wildenrath for Sabre conversion, rest of Sqn to Ahlhorn, 16 Oldenburg Sabres diverted by
blocked runway to Ahlhorn, Hammer West 1st Sabre solo, Vampires air/ground from
Ahlhorn, GCA calibrated at Jever, Bert Sanders back to UK for wedding, all completed
Sabre conversion and rest of Sqn returned to Jever by road, USN officers hosted, Sabres
on acceptance checks.

- Returned to Jever's newly re-surfaced runway from Ahlhorn, Vampires returned to UK, 12,
Sabres and 1 Vampire back to Jever, Pete Langstone and Ian Madelin posted in, Tiger
Moth in use, Hammer West stopped Sabre close formation until more general handling
experience, care needed when landing Sabre on 2000yds, Sabre Radio Compass new and
needs some getting used to, Prentice arrived to replace Tiger Moth, STI on Sabre
ejection seats, half sorties with drop tanks, last Vampire back to UK, Ex Wildgoose
Station Defence from paratroopers, operating from SE dispersal.

- Ex Wildgoose low level attacks on airfield, Fred Maycock and Brian Watson off the end in
the wet, Jever's short runway taking toll on brake pads and tyres, Prentice, Tiger Moth
and Vampire flew formation, high level battle formation practice, Eric Bowen Wg Nav
arranged test consumption and performance trials for Sabre, Ex Barrage bomber attacks
on Cologne testing jamming, Alan Armitage joined, Inspector General AM Guest visited,
Flying Wg Sports Day, Tony Pearce arrived, now 32 pilots, Hammer West purge on Sabre
landings/Take-offs.

Richardson back from PAI course, S/L Gilpin back, Station Flt Meteor blocked runway, 1st
Sabre tow of flag at Jever, Ex Lucifer, Air to Ground Sqn Avg 5.8%.

- Ex Lucifer against Holland, dinghy daggers issued, 19 Meteors from DFLS visit
intercepted, Sabre turn rounds slow at 50 mins, radar working up for Sylt, CFS Exam Wg
visit, different flag reflectors tried at Jever, Battle of Britain parade, To Wunstorf after
Sylt, 14 Sabres to Sylt, bad X-wind, rest back to Jever after 1 Sabre damaged on landing
in the undershoot, slacker pattern than Vampire, reflector problems, 3.5% Sqn avg best
Sabre Wg so far, locks on tug not flag, Sqn now full strength.

- Sylt APS for 1st time with Sabre, Ken Richardson killed Sabre flew into sea SE of Sylt, 12
Sabres fired 250 rounds from each of six guns at 32,000 ft to test mass re-arming time,
moved to Wunstorf while Jever runways being extended for Sabre operations, complaints,
of poor officer accommodation, Ex Barrage, max use of GCA, threat to fly weekends to
achieve target hours, Rat and Terrier exercises, Battle Flt, Sabre grounded tech defect,
poor radar reflector stability on flag firing at Sylt, new GCI unit at Sylt.

- Wunstorf detachment while Jever runway extended for Sabre operations continues, air-
to-ground on Strohen range, Sabres grounded for generator terminal connections, Sam

- Tools inventory check, 14 Sabres AOG for brackets, locally manufactured brackets fitted,
over weekend, Tex Williams back from leave, bad weather and thick fog, air to ground,
gunsights and radars checked for Sylt, abortive detachment for Sabre conversion on long
long runway at Bruggen, pilots learn re-armament, Battle Flight, Christmas greetings
dropped on other airfields, skeet shooting.

- To Sylt with 10 Sabres, fog and snow, very little firing, started land yacht, pilots
practiced re-arming, escape and evasion exercise, snow thawed and left fog, .303
shooting, returned to Jever, D'Arcy to ETPS, Iles replaced him as A Flt Cdr, Sabre
markings approved by Air Ministry.
February 1955
- 1 day firing at Sylt, weather delayed return of most of Sabres to Jever until 7th, snow,
lecture on Hunter by OCFW, whole station helped clear 6 inches of snow from runway,
Battle Flight, Phillips, Simms and Maycock on GCT, Tex Williams 1st solo on Sabre, flew all
day Saturday, started GCT, Bradley and Smith on Ehrwald Survival Co.
March 1955
- Ground Defence Training, 1st Hunters arrived with lecture from DFLS, night exercise, used
practice ejection seat rig, snow, Bill Blake gen failure Cat 3 into the overshoot, IF in
Vampire, air-to-ground at Meppen, rat and terrier, Battle Flight, highest monthly hours
since equipping with Sabre, Molden to CFS, Bridson to Cosford and Clayton to
Farnborough, 15 airmen and 5 Sabres withdrawn on run-down to the Hunters.
April 1955
- Air-to-ground Meppen Range, Denison and Mitchell R posted out, Battle Flight, Easter
Grant, started qtr attacks for Sylt, 16 Sabre Wing flypast Ahlhorn and Oldenburg, moved
from hangar 4 South side to hangar 1 North side to make way for 98 and 118 Sqn arriving
at Jever from Fassberg to re-equip with Hunter F.4s, CO, Ewens, Swart, Smith P, and
Phillips to Fassberg for air-to-ground demo team, all Sabres grounded for ejection seat
gun check, Fassberg Ranges demo for CinC Broadhurst and Italian Air Force Chief of Staff
Gen. Rafaelli, CinC and Rafaelli visited Jever, Hunter demoed, Ex Sky High, started
rundown, lost 5 Sabres, 2 officers and 15 airmen.
May 1955
- Cine in preparation for Sylt, Flags towed from Jever for cine practice for 4 Sqn and 93
Sqn, VCAS Sir Ivelaw-Chapman visited Jever, DFLS Course in Hunters attacked by Jever
Sabres, Bert Sanders returned Sabre to UK, Adv Party to Sylt 12th, main Party 15th,
Sabres to Sylt 16th, Ron Gray's Sabre J XB923 hit unmarked bank on short runway, no
firing until good cine films, radar snags and weather limited progress, trialed different
types of radar reflectors for the flag, average to date 12.3%, value of radar ranging
confirmed.
June 1955
- At gunnery camp at RAF Sylt, moved up to firing at 20,000 ft, Queen and Duke of
Edinburgh's Birthday Parades on successive days, paused flying to catch up on servicing
and overcome "staleness", played softball, some went out on the new Air Sea Rescue
launch from List, 8 Sabre high level battle formation flown, F/L Vasey recently back from
DFLS gave lectures while grounded by weather, 2 glider targets used, full armament and
turn round exercise practiced, some fired all 6 guns, Advanced Party left for Jever,
Sabres returned to Jever on last day, Top score for any 2ATAF Sabre Sqn, .01% better
than 93 Sqn. Best radar reflector mounted 52 ft up towing cable and radar ranging set to
"24,000ft" considered best settings.
July 1955
- Return from Sylt, straight into dispersal operations from tents, Tactical Descent adjusted
for the Sabre introduced from DFLS by Flt Lt Vasey, first pair of Hunters arrived from UK,
due to weather at Jever they had to be delivered to Oldenburg, Sabres being
re-deployed, DFLS Hunters helping with conversion from Station Flt, Bill Blake (110mtr
hurdles) and Tony Pearce (Pole Vault) to Munchen-Gladbach for 2TAF Sports, "Rat and
Terrier" exercises, shortage of ground equipment for Hunter, George Beaton returned for
re-inforcement training, S/L Bagley gave Law lectures for promotion exams, 9 pilots
converted to Hunter.
August 1955
- Hunter conversion is the main activity, serviceability problems with a big backlog of STIs
and LTIs, 2 Sabres air tested and flown to Bruggen, 3 pilots on Promotion Exams,
experience gained in flying the Hunter in manual and GCAs at Ahlhorn, practice for coming
C-in-C's parade, pilot lost had to land at Wahn short of fuel, 2 Hunters to Lyneham for
mods, Sabre sqns had 50 more airmen, now have 74 of 80 established airmen, 14 pilots
converted to Hunter - 6 to go.
September 1955
- Start on gunnery training on the Hunter, Sqn Ldr Hindmarsh, 2 Gp Wpns Off visited,
Hunter different GGS from Sabre, 2 pilots from leave converting to Hunter, work up for
C-in-C's inspection, Wg PAI converting on 4 Sqn's Hunters, air test remaining Sabre,
1st 4 ship on Hunters, battle of Britain Parade, C-in-C ACM Sir Harry Broadhurst
completed inspection of Jever, Wg and 122 figure flypasts, stand-down, 2 to Lyneham for
mods, all converted but 2 on courses, last 11 days made up for earlier bad weather,
Smith on Avon course, Langstone on a/c recce course, Pearce and Smith with Guards
regiments on Ex Commonwealth 4.
October 1955
- Week of bad weather, stand-down from Fox Paw, Dawson and Shearer arrive, losing
Hunters to mod programme at Lyneham, Boyack on escape and evasion exercise at
Minden, pair diverted to Oldenburg, Tex Williams killed during beat up after take-off from
Oldenburg, Sgt Williams buried at Hamburg, some night flying check-outs, Vasey left,
Watson back from OATS course, Smith on chemical warfare course, 3 pilots now
operational on the Hunter.
November 1955
- Poor weather, bird strike low level prov. Cat 3, lecture Mk2 ejection seat, brief on escape
& evasion, debate on standing patrols, visit to Wilhelmshaven U-boat pens and HMS

speed for Hunter4, 6 Hunters at Lyneham for mods, pilots digging trench for CRDF cables,

Duke visited en route to Hunter Users Convention at Oldenburg, Ex KingPin, night flying
problems, affect of poor weather, lack of a/c, ground crew 20% below strength.

- Poor weather, .38 Revolver/Sten gun training, Brian Watson to Jever Station Flight,
John Sutton B Flt Cdr from Stn Flt, Sqn Ldr Chapman new CO arrived from 130 Sqn,
Dennis Tann lectured on Guided Missiles, some night flying, Sqn Ldr Dower SATCO
lectured on bomber streams, some air-ground in T.11, air delivered Xmas cards to 6 other
airfields, last unmodified Hunter to Lyneham.

- Chunky Ianson converted to Hunter, Pete Smith brought modified 98 Sqn Hunter back
from Lyneham, Ex SID, 300yd break-off limit applied to Hunters, new Flying Wing ground
Training Scheme started, Pairs take-offs and landings now allowed on modified Hunters,
snow and poor weather, Battle Flight, Norman Giffin back fro re-enforcement training,
pilots checked out on snow ploughs and Crew Chief role.
February 1956
- Communism lecture, Exercise Sid Cent, Snow, Last Hunter from Lyneham, Landing in
manual, Cine work-up for Sylt started, Promotion exams.
March 1956
- Buck Buchanon converted on to Hunter, large UFO reported by Battle Flight,
Tony Vasey paid a return visit from UK, reached flying hours target by 26th, Ex Sid Cent,
re-organised the Briefing Room.
April 1956
- 7 a/c to Geilenkirchen for The Duchess of Kent flypast; Cine on flags from Sylt preparing
for next month; Wing flypast on return from Geilenkirchen; Bill Blake back from PAI
course; Borrowed Meteor 8 from Sylt for local flag towing; Experiments with new flame-
out CDTC procedure; Flying hours target reduced because of cine workup; Hours target
reached on last day and due to Avon engine situation ceased flying.
May 1956
- CinC Air Marshal The Earl of Bandon visited, flypast mini-airshow, 2 new Hunter F4s with
fully powered elevators, packing for Sylt, USAF pilots from ETAIN using hangar while
away, heavy equipment by train, 4 pilots injured when VW Combi burst a tyre, bullets
breaking spreader bars, tried 2 spreader bars, 1 sortie glider shooting, Queen's birthday
parade.
June 1956
- Back from Sylt, new spiral flame-out controlled descent pattern, 72 LAA on airfield, Evans
revisited, Bob Parkinson RN exchange arrived, Flying Wing sports, Hohne fire power demo,
Jeff Jeffrey arrived, Station Sports, visit by 105th Minesweeper Sqn RN to Wilhemshaven,
flypast for CinC Earl of Bandon and Gen Rafaelli CinC Italian AF, Martin Baker briefing,
scrambled too early to escort CAS's Comet II from Moscow, experimenting with 300kt
Hunter descent, Bob Parkinson off Oldenburg runway diverted in heavy thunderstorm,
Flight Comment debate on Maxaret units.
July 1956
- Comet to and from Moscow intercepted by Battle Flight, work up for AOC's Inspection,
Buck Buchanon from Fassberg converted to Hunter for DFLS, Wing re-arm for
AVM Ubee's AOCs, aileron jack connecting rod check, Dave Ferguson and John Hawtin
arrived, exchange day's flying with 130 Sqn Bruggen, nearly all restrictions on low flying
lifted.
August 1956
- 10 day, 4 Hunter, 6 pilot detachment to RDAF Aalborg, wrong sized crystals caused radio
failures, 724 Sqn RDAF operating from Jever, Dave Ferguson and Ginger Ratcliffe did their
1st sector recces, Wing now has its own GCA, Ex Guest.
September 1956
- Low flying resumed now Hunters all modified, Battle of Britain parade, 10 Hunters
detached to RNAF Leeuwarden for Exs Stronghold and Whipsaw, met F100s for 1st time,
20 Hunter flypast leaving Leeuwarden with 93 Sqn and 40 Hunter flypast back at Jever
with Dutch Hunters.

- Visit by Secretary of State for Air, the Rt. Hon. Nigel Birch, O.B.E., M.P., H.M. Submarine
"Subtle" courtesy visit to Wilhelmshaven, Hunter damaged landing over fog bank, Ex
Guest, Dined out Chas Boyack, Ex Wintercorn escape and evasion, won by 4 Sqn, Ian
Carr's canopy shattered at 38,000ft.
November 1956
- Chas Boyack left, Jeff Jeffrey Standard Bearer, Bill Blake PAI, Ex Guest at Gutersloh, ATC
Tower re-organised, Slash Slaney arrived, Pete Smith to Stn Flt and extended for 1 year,

- Standardise GCIs, sudden clamp - Wing caught out Sir John Sutton's story, Ex Synthex
Guest, Venom pilots visit to fly Hunter, promotion exams, Tony Pearce dined out, 16
Hunter flypast for visiting German Naval cadets, 1st Hunter F.6 arrived, Q Oswell and
Tony Boyle arrived.

- Re-equipping with F.6, different mod states, Non-operational by 8th, Brian Iles dined out,

Vic Woodward flying with sqn, Ex Kingpin, No AOC's inspection Anglo-German Open Day
instead, new 2TAF Battle Flight arrangements, Ex Vigilant, deleted line about actual
interception, farewell flypast for CinC, Ginger Ratcliffe compressor failure forced landed on
Baltrum Island off North coast, photos, DFLS intercepted.
June 1957
- Flypast Bruggen for incoming CinC Edwards-Jones, Queen's Birthday Parade, 1st Anglo-
German week and Open Day, photos, Jever Church Service and parade, Tony Boyle led
Prince Rupert School cadets, dined out Danny Daniels and Bill Blake at Haus der Getreuen,
Dave Watt made Hon Member, 6 aircraft AOG, John Sutton led 6 aircraft to Middleton St
George, 92 Sqn to Jever, telescramble Middleton.
July 1957
- Bill Maish arr from 98 as PAI, Barry Dale and Don Riley joined from 98Sqn, Al Pollock joined
from 26 Sqn at Oldenburg, flag towing Meteor borrowed from Sylt for APS work-up,
Schillig Range between coast and islands used, Andy McNae and Paddy Hipperson joined
from 98 Sqn, Ex Guest as bombers to Bruggen, Advance and Road Parties left for Sylt.
August 1957
- To Sylt for APS, Problem with new type of flags folding, Chris Cross 44%, Bill Maish 56%,
Tim McElhaw joined, Chappy Chapman dined out in Westerland, Sylt Open Day, Medium
level average 22.1% new record for Hunters at Sylt, also 833 lowest stoppage rate,
returned to Jever.
September 1957
- 4 tanks fitted, Brewer & Hunwick solo Hunter6, Oldenburg Farewell Ball, deployed under
tents to Schleswigland for Ex Brown Jug, Farewell to John Sutton and Mitch Shearer, Wg
flypast Aarhus, 12 Hunters flew back to Jever, Dave Ferguson abort TO for manual
reversion.
October 1957
- Ex Argus, Air-to-ground Nordhorn, 1st West German A/C seen, Jeff Jeffrey port brake
failed, Tinkle Bell 1st Hunter solo, Andy McNae manual reversion.
November 1957
- Ex Amulet, Flying Battle Flight introduced, New Hunter Flight Simulator, Roy Cope-Lewis
arrived.
December 1957
- Air-to-ground, Paddy Hipperson broke arm, Anglo-German St. Nicholas party, Hamburg
rugby, snow ploughing, Pirates at Children's Christmas Party, Cine work-ups ready for
Sylt.
1958
January 1958 - Station Alert, Canberra landed with brakes locked on, lots of snow ploughing and low
cloud, radar ranging to be fitted, started pre Sylt training on flag.

February 1958 - Detached to Sylt in heavy snow, Al Pollock swam in the sea, Chris Cross went off the
end of the runway with brake failure, average up to 18.4% at end of month.
March 1958 - At APS Sylt, Andie McNae head injuries at soccer, Dougie Bebington top scorer
posted to Venoms in Aden, Al Pollock published 'Focus on Four', John Hawtin played
hockey for 2TAF, 23.9% med level record for British Hunters at Sylt, firing on gliders,
returned to Jever to re-decorated offices, Slash and Inge Slaney married in
Oldenberg.
April 1958 - Pre-A.O.C.'s inspection, Paddy Hipperson to UK on IRE course, Roy Cope-Lewis
married, exchange detachment with 444 RCAF Sqn at Bad Seollingen, local fixer and
GCI troubled by Hunters lack of IFF, CO, Gerry Eades and Dickie Barraclough flew famil
in Sabre 6, comparison and tactics Sabre v Hunter, Don Riley left for UK, Ron Lund
joined from 14 Sqn, moved into dispersals.
May 1958 - AOC's Inspection, parade in Hangar, 2nd in Inter-Section 7 a-side rugby, Pete Jones hydraulic failure, Anglo-German Open Day, Ron Lund landed with port wheel stuck up, John Farley arrived, 1st Hunter F.6 with electric tail and saw tooth leading edge, Dined-out Dickie Barraclough, Bill Brewer, Andie McNae and Al Pollock.
June 1958 - Ex Fullplay NATO Summer Ex, Dickie Barraclough left, Dickie Millward and Pete Martin
joined, Andy McNae lost his hood from Z XG262 Andy OK, Z cat 4, Hawtin, McNae,
Slaney and Cope-Lewis played tennis for station in Berlin, John Hawtin ran in Northern
Area Athletics Championships, Hipperson to Sylt for AIRCENT Gunnery Team.
July 1958 - Dale, Maish and Hipperson on 2TAF Gunnery Team squad, poor serviceability.
September 1958 - At Sylt with whole wing, Ron Lund married, radar ranging problems, Bill Maish highest scorer 62% personal avg 42.5%, sqn avg 26.4%, Geoff Atherton OC 122 Wg
led whole wing back to Jever, Watson and Booth arrived, Maish left.
October 1958 - Millward left for FCS co., practice General Alert, Ex Sunbeam raids on UK, John Farley
wedded in station church, Pete Jennings joined.
November 1958 - Extended leading edge and electric all flying tails being added to Hunters, Jarvis and
Holliday arrived.
December 1958 - Used ORP and Telebriefing, Tom Watson married in Schortens, last extended leading
edge and electric flying tail aircraft received, bad weather, Battle Flight over
Christmas.
1959
January 1959 - Lots of snow ploughing, Millward back from FCS course, FCS team visited Squadron, 4 gun firing into sea.
February 1959 - 12 days no flying because of fog, exercised to Military Vigilance, practice Scarlet Alert, deployed to dispersals.
March 1959 - Mainly preparing for Sylt, brief on Hunter T.7, GCI now has IFF so many scrambles, new
CO S/L Spiers welcomed, S/L McElhaw handed over and returned to UK, flew 10 Hunters
to Sylt.
April 1959 - At Sylt, 8 pilots to Gutersloh for Chief of Air Staff Address, 3 Sqns returned to Jever
Swift blocked runway with burst tyres.
May 1959 - Won Station 6-a-side soccer, formation flypast for Headmasters' visit, Dougie Barr
arrived, Barry Dale left, AOC's inspection, Mike Tyrrell reserve low level aeros for 2TAF.
June 1959 - Exchange with French Air Force at Dijon, Jennings injured his leg, Tyrrell gave low level aeros display for Anglo-German Open Day, Hall attended RCAF Escape & Evasion Course, helped out 93 Sqn who were short of a/c for Battle Flight.
July 1959 - Gerry Eades and Ron Lund left, Brian Thornton arrived, Flying Wing won Station Sports
(photo added), achieved monthly hrs target for 1st time since May58.
August 1959 - Operated from dispersals for month, DME trial, 16 aircraft low level strike, Tony Boyle
left, John Walker arrived, achieved monthly target, 8 Hunter formation shot for 4 Sqn
Christmas card.
September 1959 - Battle Flight and cine weave practice for forthcoming Sylt detachment, moved to Sylt
14th, formation flyby at Jever and Sylt, B Flt won cine weave barrel, radar ranging and
aircraft serviceability problems.
October 1959 - On detachment to Sylt, gunsight and radar ranging problems, weather defeated target of
16 sorties each for Duncan Trophy, returned to Jever on 13th, conversions to Hunter
T.7, Battle Flight.
November 1959 - Weather beginning to deteriorate, Air/Sea Rescue search for West of 93 Sqn , Gleen 93
Sqn flying 4 Sqn Hunter lost his hood on take off, low level air to ground strikes on
Strohen Range, building new pilots' coffee bar.
December 1959 - Report of major alert scramble, Jever happy Christmas flyby Oldenburg, Ahlhorn and
Gutersloh.
1960
January 1960 - Appalling weather, very little flying, Green Salad sorties, heavy snow and ice, Barr
'stranded' in Dijon.
March 1960 - Good weather, good training, hit target hours, Hall Captained RAF Germany Rugby XV,
Martin represented Station at Squash.
April 1960 - Air combat against GAF Ahlhorn Sabre 6s, 8 Hunters to exchange with 322 and 326
Norwegian squadrons at RYGGE, preparing for AOCs, new Lupin garden, Millward and
Williams left, Tyrrell commands 'B' Flt.
May 1960 - Returned from Norwegian Air Base Rygge, AOC's on 10th, work-up for Sylt, cine average
86.6%, 2nd daughter for Jarvis.
June 1960 - Work-up and move to SYLT, cine-weave average 80.11%, air firing sqn average 30.1%
highest ever for Hunter Squadron, currently in the lead for Duncan Trophy.
July 1960 - In dispersal while Hangar and pans being repaired, Walker and Jarvis chosen for 2 TAF
Gunnery Team eliminations at Sylt, 7 Sqn Hunters to be used for 2 TAF Gunnery Team
as they are in such good condition, Jarvis promoted to F/L, Booth had a daughter,
whole Sqn invited to GAF Ahlhorn Summer Ball.
August 1960 - In dispersal, operating with 93 Sqn, Walker and Jarvis chosen for 2 TAF Gunnery Team,
Norwegian Sabre Sqn exchange (Photo), French Mystere Sqn exchange, most of Sqn
aircraft and groundcrew at Sylt supporting 2 TAF Gunnery Team very successfully,
Jennings became IRE.
September 1960 - 1st 19 days combined with 93 Sqn, Exercise Flashback.
October 1960 - Air-to-Ground 49.44% average, lots of Battle Flight.
November 1960 - Air-to-Ground 61.85% average, deployed to Bruggen whilst Jever runway repaired,
Hunter/Javelin PI tactics.
December 1960 - Bad weather, Sqn disbanded at Jever, 13 of the aircrew postings, handover Standard to
79 Sqn.
