My parents owned the Schuetzenhof were to my memory some "wild" officer induction parties were thrown. However, I don't have too many memories from that time, I was too young. Later (1967) I served three years as soldier in the "Luftwaffe" at Jever airport as a mechanic on the Starfighter (F-104). After leaving the Luftwaffe I studied engineering and left Jever. I worked 17 years for Siemens on power station automation systems (coal, gas and oil fired, any size) and because of my travels world wide I met my wife in your colonies - Australia. She is the reason that I am now living in Melbourne, Australia and still travel, mostly to Korea. My parents sold the Schuetzenhof in 1997 and it received a breath if new life and eventually became what it is today. Both my parents passed away in the meantime and I was pleased to read that some of your group visit Jever sometimes and even stay at the Schuetzenhof. Please find attached pictures taken at one open day of the airport (I think 1969) with our then General Steinhoff addressing the soldiers, the first Harrier jump jet during a demonstration, the Starfighter and a few in one of the repair halls. If anyone of you visits Melbourne then don;t hesitate to contact me, I was a child when you were in Jever, but I still remember a lot from that time." Notes: On 9Feb15 Glyn wrote: "Trawling the Web for information about RAF Stations I served at I came across the interesting website for RAF Jever Germany (Jever Steam Laundry.org) which included some entries regarding a 2nd TAF Gunnery Contest at the French Air Force Station Cazeau in 1958. Browsing this I found two photos which to my surprise included me. I may be in others but their details are too poor to recognise anyone. However I was part of the Ground Crew Team for that Contest. As MY Photos of that Contest and the pre-Testing for it at Sylt were all lost (except one) while I was away from home serving at RAF Luqa Malta in the 60's, I was delighted to relive the experience through the Photos and some of the comments contained in the website. At the time I was a recently qualified J/T Engine Fitter Ex RAF Oldenburg posted to Jever and employed In Tech Wing (ASF & Engine Bay) Servicing Both Hunters and Swifts from the Squadrons. Being new to the Station and perhaps Surplus to Requirements, I was 'Volunteered' for the Contest team and travelled to Sylt with a pack of Squadron Sgt's, Corporals, and SAC's I hardly knew (I think I was the only J/T with them) A great six weeks was had at Sylt and then the long haul by Train through Germany and France (with a lovely few hours stop in Paris enabling some of us to see the sites) to Cazeau. Our accommodation in the French NCOs Mess there was quite primitive and the food was pretty awful too (made palatable only by the cheap table wine supplied at every meal.) However I enjoyed almost every day spending most evenings at Arcachon in the Hotel and town Bars. Happy Days. All too soon the train journey back to Jever and with my Repat only six weeks or so later and a change from Fighter A/C to Valiant and Victor Bombers at RAF Honington Suffolk. After tours at 32 MU St. Athan and RAF Idris Libya and Malta I returned to Honington in 1969 with the reformed 12 Squadron (Buccaneers) and eventually took early retirement as a Chief Tech Aircraft/Propulsion on the Buccaneer CEDIT Team in 1973. Memories: Flight line at Sylt. Doing a Turnround on a Hunter when a Javelin a few yards down the line let blast 10 or so rounds of 30mm which cleared the Butts (due to angle of the Jav's wing when static). I believe the shells landed at a farm some miles away. We always ducked under our guns after that. A Hunter was sent off with main U/C locks still fitted. (Airframe Mech Job). It made a very quick and safe return. A Hunter was sent off with low fuel. (Engine Mech Job) (in fact my fault as during my refuel someone switched off the power and the refuel stopped early) Moral, Don't assume Check. I was almost sent back to Jever for that. Smell of burnt Berets as we slapped out the flames on the Hunter's underside with them caused by the hot exhaust of AVPIN starters. I hated AVPIN. Personal embarrassing moment. Group Evening out at the Tivoli Night Club in Westerland. Was asked to dance by a German Girl, went up to the 'raised' Dance Floor, she stepped onto it and promptly disappeared, leaving me completely flummoxed, she appeared again from the other direction a few seconds later - the dance floor revolved. Nice evening though, but I was the butt of rude comments from the boys for ages after. Saddest moment? Seeing a Memorial Plaque at Cazaux which I was told was to commemorate some (12 or so) French Resistance Fighters executed by the Germans on that spot in WWII." |

Bill Sheppard who was a Hunter pilot, doing a spell in Wing ops. I remember Grp Capt Smith, who was definitely a strong minded man. He once forced us to have 'domestic evenings' for a full week because he was not satisfied when he did his weekly inspection. I remember spending long hours in the WVS lounge playing snooker, and became quite skilled with so much practice. The two WVS ladies were wonderful, Sally and her collegue who's name, unfortunately I cannot remember. There was a culture of very heavy drinking during my time at Jever, and after a pep talk from one of the senior officers, a regular shout from airmen rolling home to bed after an evening in the NAAFI or the Malcolm club was : "Remember men, we are Britains first line of defence"! A very tense time was when the Russians started 'buzzing' our aircraft around Berlin, and I remember the Hunters being lined up fully armed around the perimeter track. I tranferred from Jever to Gutersloh after the close-down, and although I enjoyed my time there, I still remember Jever very fondly. I originally arrived at Jever after sailing from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, and then the long train Journey through Holland and Germany to Jever. I remember that the RAF travelled in comparative luxury on the train compared to the army lads, we had plenty of room, the carriages were newer and smarter, whereas the army carriages were overcrowded and older. Class distinction which surely caused some ill feeling! The army lads were also marched along the platform to the carriage where they had to board the train, whereas the RAF guys were allowed to stroll along, and shown which carriage to get onto by friendly 'Snowdrops'! (No offence intended!) " |

Notes: On 19Oct12 Roy wrote: "I was not a member of the RAF Regiment (No shoulder flash), just the squadrons "medic". I spent well over a year with them. In the first instance it was 53-54, and the second occasion from 58 - 59. I was promoted to Sgt in 59 and posted to RAF Butzweilerhof, in the suburbs of Cologne. Probably one of the best posting in the 2ndTAF,but that is another story. In the photographs I spotted one a Vampire T11. I had a flight in that aircraft. It had just had a major service and was due to go on airtest. I had the chance of a seat and took it. I remember the pilots' safety briefing. "Keep your feet on the floor and don't touch a bloody thing. If you feel sick, use your beret, or you will spend the rest of the day cleaning out the cockpit. Finally we don't have ejector seats, so if we have to bale out, I will let the canopy go, release your harness, stand on the seat and launch yourself out of the cockpit. It won't really help, as we will both get wrapped round the tail fin". Exhilarating flight, including aerobatics, and I didn't need my beret! Don't remember the name of the pilot. I had always wanted to be a pilot, spurred on no doubt by the "Biggles" books as a teenager. Not to be however, due to poor eyesight. Had worn spectacles from age of 14, but always took a keen interest in military aircraft. In the RAF took every opportunity that presented itself, to fly in the "pointed end". Became a "medic" quite by chance, but found I was good at it, and enjoyed it. I did however manage to clock up a considerable number of flying hours in the cockpit, at the controls, at my last unit before being demobbed."Roy wrote on 23Oct12: "My last three years of service, 1961-63 was at RAF Shawbury. It was and still is the Air Traffic Control School. Their were three squadrons of aircraft based there; Chipmunks for the University Air Squadron; Piston Engined Provosts and Vampires for the GCA aspect of training. A Valetta was based at the comm flight. More about this later! Many of the sections were civilian manned, including all servicing of aircraft, carried out by Airworks Ltd,(Or some such name). Station strength was not more than two hundred, not including students. The unit was there for fairly quiet, as regards calls on the Sick Quarters. In fact for some time we did not have a M.O and relied on the local G.P. I became very friendly with a polish pilot, Master Pilot Janizewski who was flying the Proctors. He enjoyed company when aloft and asked me if I would like to accompany him, and that is how it all started. The Proctor is side by side seating and ideal as a trainer. I spent many hours with him, both on GCA duties and free flying. (He had so many free hours each month to ensure he met his hours target.) I won't bother you with the details, but eventually I had mastered most aspects of flying to such a level that he allowed me to fly the aircraft when under the control of the GCA students, (based at a satellite airfield - Slepe, some miles away from Shawbury). On the first couple of occasions, the instructor chipped in to ask "exactly who was flying the aircraft", apparently Jan had a reputation for taking ground staff up. I am sure you are familiar with the GCA instruction. Heading, rate of descent (or climb) above or below glide path. I became quite proficient. He would not however allow me to land. Take off yes, landing no. I understood, in the air mistakes can be corrected, landing possibly not. His free flying time was, to say the least, exhilarating. He loved to do aerobatics. I'm not sure this was allowed, but he always practised well away from base. I well remember his routine. Loop the loop, with a roll off the top; outside turns, stall turns, spins, (falling leaf), Inverted climbs, I imagine just about anything the plane was capable of. The G meter would often go up to four, and on more than one occasion I almost greyed out. I never suffered from air sickness. When I left the RAF I would have loved to have taken civil flying lessons and gain a PPL, however was not to be, I had a wife and daughter and a house to purchase and furnish. I did make enquiries at the time, £16 a lesson. Not much by to-days standards, but it was a weeks pay then. I did almost graduate to aircrew. In 61 they (the Air Ministry) introduced the new aircrew category of Air Loadmaster/Air Quartermaster, and asked for volunteers. The eyesight requirement was reduced and I could just about pass, so I applied. I was accepted and sent to the Aircrew Selection Centre at Hornchurch. I passed the initial interview, passed the medical and just scraped through the eyesight test. Everyone had to appear before the President of the Medical Board. It was just my luck that he was the Consultant Ophthalmologist to the RAF. He checked my medical documents and said there was no way I could have passed the eye test, and he would personally test me. End of story, failed. There is just one more episode to recount. I referred to the Valetta on comm flight. This was stripped out for freight duties. It left every Monday for RAF Wildenrath with urgent radio and radar spares, and returned the same day. There was just a pilot and co-pilot. No navigator, whose seat was always free. The co-pilot was a SNCO and I flew with them on about four occasions. One however stands out. We had just left Wildenrath and were climbing away, and at about 800ft, the port engine burst into flame and stopped. They say ignorance is bliss. It was in my case, I had no idea just how serious the situation was. The pilot put out a pan pan call and we turned and made it back to the runway, and landed safely. A tug had to tow us to dispersal. On alighting, out came the cigarettes, and they were puffing away. The Co-pilot then explained to me that with a full fuel load and freight, with only one engine, climbing, we should have fallen out of the sky. That the skipper turned the right way ,literally. To have turned to port would have resulted in us cartwheeling into the ground. We stopped overnight whilst an engine change was carried out. The flight to Germany was quite interesting. We had to use the civil airways, and go via London and London Control, then cross the channel via Dover and come under Brussels Control. On the return journey we had to land at Manston to clear customs, which on all my trips resulted in the Customs Officer driving out to the end of the runway, sticking his head through the fuselage door, and asking if there was anything to declare. Of course, there never was!!! The co-pilot told me that they always contacted Manston Tower as soon as they reached the Channel on the return journey, and asked which customs officer was on duty. Apparently one of them was very keen and insisted on the aircraft taxiing to dispersal, where he carried out a full search. The co-pilot said when that officer was on duty, they would develop engine trouble and have to divert!! As a final point. Shawbury was a Master Diversion Airfield, long runway, excellent weather record, and open 24/7. We received quite a few interesting visitors, usually at night. Most memorable was "V" Force, three Vulcans. Arrival was quiet, departure, something else!!! |

Notes: On 10Apr13 Ed wrote: "I arrived at Jever in Sept 1958. Straight from Halton ,a shiny upside down single Chevron Junior tech airframe fitter and left two and a half years later. I spent the first year in ASF learning the ways of minor servicing of the Swifts and Hunters. From there I was moved to Station Flight for the rest of my Posting. This section had a selection of resident aircraft; An Anson, Chipmunk, two T11 Vampires and a pair of T7 two seat Hunters. Jim Butler and a Kiwi whose name escapes me were the two Flt/Lts in charge and joined later by a Flt Lt Hook. Besides looking after all visiting aircraft all Hunter pilots in Germany came to us for annual assessment. It was never a dull moment. In my opinion Jever was a magic experience and never to be forgotten, I met a girl called Ursula in the "Wald Haus" in Varel and we celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary some time ago. I have lost forever are a lot of names but the ones called up on the pictures I will expand on:- Pete Doidge was the Stn/Flt Cpl electrician and famed for buying the first Mini seen at Jever. Douglas was his sidekick. Bernie Puzey, an Engines J/T and I were posted to Jever together from Halton. Jo Bammer was a larger than life Scottish Rigger in ASF and one of the funniest people you could hope to meet. Stan Cobb an Engine Cpl sticks in my mind as he was much older and wiser and full of good advice. The O2 Man was known simply as BC. I think that BC was a cartoon character in a newspaper, anyway he was Stn Flts instrument Cpl. Tommy Gibson was a Chief/Tech rigger who worked in ASF and later moved to Stn Flt. Tommy will be remembered by many as he was a very popular Airframe Instructor at the RAF Halton Apprentice school. 111 Sqdn turned up several times during my time at Stn Flt and we got to know them well. All sorts of other visitors turned up but the biggest shock was a lunchtime panic when a Wing of Swedish Air Force first generation Saab fighters dropped in out of the blue with no notice to anyone. (Unkind gossip had it they had got lost). While working in ASF I was dispatched to 4 Sqn to find the Squadron engineering Officer who had to sign some sort of concession in the 700 for the aircraft we were working on. I duly met up with a Flt Lt C Hopkins who kindly did the necessary. Nearly twenty five Years later. I had resigned from my post as a Technical Author with a company in Sittingbourne. EPS,but was persuaded to postpone this as the Company had just engaged a retired Wing Commander to set up a Product Support Group and a more suitable employment for me could be in that area. A meeting was arranged for a few days later and I met Charles Hopkins for the second time. He had recently retired from his last post as Wing Co Eng at Waddington. We had a grand time for several years until Charles moved on, I think to BaE and I became the EPS works Manager. Charles features in your website but there is no address, just that he now lives in France. I really would like to get in touch with him. After Jever I was posted to RAF Watton ,380th on the dreaded Married Quarters and Hiring waiting list. I ended up buying a caravan and a mighty Bond three wheeler. Just in time for the start of a ghastly winter. Welcome back to U.K harsh reality. Ursula could not understand why I could have got a pay rise by sweeping the streets for the Council. Two years later came a move to Wyton to 51 Sqdn for a five year screened tour. This was followed by nearly seven Years at Marham as a Crew Chief on 57 Sqdn Victor Tankers and then a final five Years in Munich on the CSDE Tornado Project Team. That left me a forty year old in civi Street and a couple of years away from my second meeting with Charles Hopkins. The five Years with 57 Sqdn involved numerous detachments to the Med ahd the Near and Far East. The Squadron hack Hasting TG 530, veteran of the Berlin Air Lift took us to Aden, Sharja, Libya and Med stations. Detachments further afield left us at the mercy of transport Command. Everywhere we went, where there were Hunters stationed or on detachment I seemed to recognise most of the pilots. Its not unlikely that you were one of them!" |

Ground Wireless Mechanic. |

3Sep55. |
Notes: Svc No: 4112149. Dick says: "I was stationed at Jever for 2.5 years after completing a Ground Wireless Mechanic's course at Locking starting on 20th May 1953 until about 3rd Sept 1955. Most of that time Wilbur Wright was my CO. So finding the www.rafjever.org site was very interesting. I had been looking at modern Jever on Google Earth (which has expanded beyond my imagination) and gave up trying to find the windmill that I remember as being less than a quarter of a mile from the town centre. So I put 'windmill jever germany' into Google and got the shot from the tiger moth flying about 10 feet above ground level. It will take ages to look at all the pictures and read the history if I'm going to continue my normal busy retirement so I'm sending you this now to express my appreciation. I have been a keen amateur photographer since the end of the war and being posted to Germany was a great opportunity to purchase a top range 35 mm camera (Voigtllander Vitessa). I still have the negatives of all the pictures I took at Jever. When I was at Jever we set up a camera club and got a room upstairs in the education block that we blacked out to make a darkroom and I think PSI coughed up for an enlarger and developing dishes etc. I was able to develop my films there and make prints. I have kept negatives from that time and I see I have 5 films. I have a film & slide scanner that I hope still works so I'll see what is relevant and interesting." On 25Apr19 Dick added the following: "I did all the installation of the radio and comms gear in the FWHQ when they built the viewing pod on top of the met office so I was around for much of the time while controllers and staff were gaining confidence. I was the only one who knew where all the wires went. Fortunately it was a relatively simple set-up and it had not given any problems before I was demobbed. My 'proper' job was looking after the transmitters and receivers, the two direction-finding wagons, runway caravan and cathode-ray direction equipment when it arrived so my official base was the transmitting station on the south-west corner of the airfield. After my period in the Service I worked in the Cable & Wireless foreign service and spent two years in Cyprus where we had a contract to maintain the civil aviation communications at Nicosia airport which was shared jointly with the RAF. One incident there that might amuse you occurred when I was called out to fix the VOR ( a transmitter near the centre of the airfield about 100 yards from the runway and had to get permission from the RAF-manned control tower to drive my car across the taxi track. As I was heading towards my parked car an officer appeared and shouted "Endecott why aren't you in uniform?" He obviously recognized me from my days in Jever and I was pleased to tell him I was now a civilian. In the conversation that followed he asked how how much I now earned and I took some pleasure in telling him my salary was about equivalent to Flight Lieutenant Not bad at the age of 24! My father lived about a mile from you when he worked in London and I stayed with him when I was on leave so my knowledge of the Sevenoaks area was not extensive as he moved to Dorset when he retired. I regret that that I knew nothing about the sailing club or the Cheshire home." |

I haven't lived in London since 1962-63 right after my demob, at which time I accepted a track scholarship to a small college in Texas. London remains my favorite city even though my wife and I fell in love with Ireland when we went there a few years ago, an experience that convinced me I was really Irish rather than Scottish (Glasgow)." In July 1959 he won the station 1500 mtrs and was second for the 2nd TAF in the 800 mtrs against the Royal Netherlands Air Force in The Hague. In July 1960 he won the 2nd TAF 400 mtr hurdles and was 3rd in the 800. The same month he won the hurdles against BAOR and the RNAF and was second against the Luftwaffe. All the Jever photographs were taken during those years. When he returned to England in 1960 he was stationed in Bassingbourne working mostly on Vulcans. In July 1962, just before he was demobbed, he finished second in the RAF one mile championships in 4.11.2 and in the Interservices one mile in 4.14. |

Notes: Ken Senar told me 8Apr05 that as FW Adj. Ken had to stand in for him when he was on leave or a course. His office was in the old operating theatre in FW HQ which had been a hospital. The drains in the floor in there stank to high heaven and a book had to be kept across the grid to stop the stench escaping. We both kept an eye on a civilian worker who we knew was from the Eastern Bloc and worked for Wing Commander Way, i/c Tech Wing. The man escaped via Lübeck to the East when things hotted up for him. Enough said. |

101 SU Flighter plotter Nat Serv. |
Late 56. |
About58. |
Notes: I was a reluctant National Service "Fighter Plotter" via Bridgnorth, Middle Wallop and Borgentreich. I had put down for several more attractive trades including languages and photgraphy but these were ignored! Thus when I arrived shortly out of school at RAF Jever in late 1956, I found myself on the regular run to Brockzetel as a member of 101 SU. Not one of my top ten work venues!. My posting to Jever was because of my status as a UK number one half miler and the stations athletics facilities and reputation. After a winter of cross-country with such stars as Don Shelley, the athletics season unravelled and in addition much to the envy of many less sports minded airmen I became more privieged as "Badminton fodder" for Group Captain Hughes and his wife together with PTI Cpl Chubb. PFO Ken Saw looked after the athletes well, and we had extra eggs with our breakfast. The star Jever athlete in those days was Lloyd Maloney a native of Montserrat who remains a good friend to this day. He won the Bronze in the AAA Decathlon while at Jever, having received extra coaching from Mr Edwards the PE master at Prince Rupert's School Wilhelmshaven. My 800m colleague in those days was Frank Di Rienzo with whom I still remain in contact. He now owns two restaurants in London. Might be suitable for one of your re unions. Athletically 2TAF was probably rather too easy and whlie there I only lost twice to one airman, the late David Brown who flew javelins out of Bruggen, and once each to a visiting Cambridge University man and Metz, a German at TSV Wilhelmshaven. I move on from the RAF to Loughborough for three years and made the 800m final finishing 5th, the winner being Ron Delaney, and the 4x400m final in the world student Games in Sofia Bulgaria. One of the quartet was a callow Menzies Campbell. In 1962 I ran for England in the Commonwealth Games in Perth WA and was again 5th in the final with world record holder Peter Snell winning. As well as enjoying a teaching career in PE and Geography I have been seriously involved as an athletics coach, team manager and official. It has all been been demanding of time and effort but thorughly rewarding Am off to Beijing tomorrow with Nicola my wife in support of Martyn Rooney, whom I coached from a very young age to 20 and whom I still advise. He is the UK No 1 over 400m and is currently running about 3.5sec faster than I did! 800m was however my forte. |

And there is one fact, that makes them even more interesting: Only a view weeks after you visited Jever in 2005, me and some former comrades met there. OTL Linke told us about your visit and two of his men did nearly the same tour around the airbase with us. I've been working at the Aeronautical Information Service (AIS), which was (and probably still is) situated in the "Old Air Traffic Control Building", as you call it. So I'm very happy to find some pictures of this building (we only had the permission to take photographs at the the main sentry close to the gate guard). The AIS was in the ground floor left of the semi-circular (former) local control room. |

After my basic training at Bridgenorth I was expecting to go to Weeton on a driving course as I already had a licence, I found myself going to Jever in Jun53 instead. As I had been given no training I was an AC2 MT Assistant untrained, after being allowed to remuster in Nov53 as an MT driver I was then given my AC1. Jan54 I went on the refuelling flight looking after 4 and 93 Squadrons. I was promoted to LAC Sep54. I remained at Jever until Sep 55, when I was sent back to England to RAF Weeton on a Mechanics Course and hoping to go back to Jever, but instead found myself being posted once again this time to RAF West Freugh Scotland, just outside Stranraer then in Jul56 was promoted to Corporal. Then on the move once again this time to 16 MU Stafford where I remained until being demobbed in Feb57. My best time was spent at Jever, everything about the place was good, including the beer at 35 pfennigs per glass. My accommodation was in Block 35 near the Airmens' Mess. I always kept in touch with some of the GSO(German) drivers that I worked with, and in 1995 took my family back and showed them where I spent the happiest time, so we have spent 11 holidays in Jever staying with the Schroder family, the last time was 2008. [Web Master says this is a co-incidence as Helen Schroder was a daily help to my wife's mother and she attended our wedding at Jever!] I was allowed to go round the camp in 1995 and 1998, but when I tried again in 2008 I only got as far as the guardroom. The camp picture house was some way out of the camp, but when I left in 55 a new cinema was being built just inside not far from the guardroom." |

Notes: Philip Westwell writes: "Mike and I consoled each other, as we were the two lowest-paid men in the Mess for many months. We were National Servicemen with rank of Plt. Off. and paid a mere 13 shillings per day. Others with that rank had enhanced pay, due to being aircrew and/or holding a regular or short-service commission. Jever had quite an extravagent lifesytle at the time, possibly prompted by CO Powel-Sheddon's gourmet interests, and 13 bob a day could not be stretched to meet all Mess commitments! Nevertheless, happy days!" |

Notes: My recollections of 'Buster' the squadron mascot are perhaps worth noting. Buster would sit on the apron outside No. 1 hanger and watch for the N.A.A.F.I. waggon to leave 93 squadron apron and he would then come into our hanger and bark, we all then knew it was our N.A.A.F.I. time. On Saturday afternoon he would go to the bus stop outside camp gates and wait for the German service bus and go into town, we had no idea where he went during the afternoon but he always returned at tea time, perhaps with a smile on his face. On working days his carer, Don West, would lift him up into the back of our Thorneycroft lorry and Buster would stand in the middle between the airmen and however eratic the ride was he would never move a paw. He anticipated every bend by leaning one way or the other. I recall on another occasion him jumping off the train going on some exercise or perhaps to Sylt and Don together with an officer had to chase after him, the train departing without them. When we returned, I believe Buster was demoted from Junior Technician, he was of course on squadron strength. I was at Jever from early 1953 to 1955 as Airframe Mechanic. The squadron had D.H.Vampires at that time, we then took delivery of F86 Sabres. On my Demob the Hunters were just coming on to squadron. |

Notes: On 25Jun13 Barry wrote: "Have only recently discovered the 'Steam Laundry' and have found photos I had no idea existed. I have made contact with one of my room mates Robert Rudd whom I last saw 68 years ago. Peter Rose was also a friend, I can see him now cringing as I crunch the Thorney Croft gears as we drove up to Sylt. Happy Days. I attach photographs taken I suspect by Pete Aguer? 93 Sqdn photographer of the parade and presentation of the Duncan Trophy. Yes it was B cold. Group Captain Powel-Shedon on taking his place to lead the parade announced that as he was tone deaf to ignore him if he got out of step. I heard this order as I was the lead man in the centre rank, behind Flt Sgt Jock Blair's elbow in the photo. On another occasion the Groupie took one of our Sabres up for a flip, on his return as I took his straps he proceeded to tell me with great enthusiasm how much he had enjoyed the flight having flown over Sylt etc. coming from such an experienced pilot too. There must be more to this flying than I realise. I was given a flight in a Mk 7 on the day I cleared from 64 Sqdn Duxford much to the joy of my pals I was very ill indeed. My next flight was with Flt Sgt Telfer in the Tiger Moth at Jever a much more enjoyable event. One other ride in a two seater was when Mr Iles asked me to flick the switches whilst he swung the prop on his private Miles M-18 we then taxied from Station Flight over to 93s hanger which was just prior to his flight to bulawayo. We moved down to Cooden [gods waiting room] seven years ago after living close to the A21 at Farnborough for twenty years or so. We had a central heating business in Green St Green so worked mainly in the surrounding area. The company name was Golden Heating and was often thought to be a Chinese take a way!!!" |

Notes: Click to see the full story of Ron's landing on the autobahn. From Ron's own Notes (21Mar06): "Left Jever in November 1955. (See note on Snowie Ewens). Had asked Hammer West if it was possible to extend my service, but he declared it was too late to be considered. Really he was pissed off that I had bent two Sabres and devoured a large goose in my Hunter's starboard intake which cracked the main spar! (Leading a four attacking bridges on the Jeder/Ems canal, I called "flock of geese pull hard" and there had to be one of course, not speaking to the rest of the flock perhaps and I hit it. Ian Madelin was my No. 2 and had a shufty around. In his inimitable drawl he said, "Can't see anything from here, but at the rear there is a wonderful smell of cooking.") I was a young man who lived for the day and had no thought of my future. Anyway there was always the Auxiliary Air Force! (It closed 10 March 1957.) I eventually rose through the ranks of British Railways; enrolled for Teacher Training and had a rapid rise to Head of Maths before early retirement. Bored, took up supply work, and finished up part time at Peterlee College of Further Education until it went all sporty and the academic work vanished. Started GRAYWALL North East Animal Ambulance with David Wall a veterinary surgeon partner and while the ambulance side has closed, still doing some spin off work from it. Married, divorced, and now very happily married once again. Started the JAR Private Pilots Licence course February 2005, completed just in time for the January 2006 Wings night. Instrument Rating next. Co-incidentally a great deal of the North East Animal Ambulance work was around Tom Balfour's hometown." Ken Senar says Ron was a keen 8mm movie photographer and may have some film of Jever. |

On 24May13 David wrote: "I joined the R.A.F. in June 56 and spent the first 2years on piston and jet provost at 2FTS. from there I was posted to Germany in May 58. I arrived on 93 Sqn from R.A.F. I spent my last 3 years as a Jnr Tech at R A F Abingdon firstly on Beverleys and then on Andovers leaving the service in June 68. From then on I worked for Skyways of London and then Dan-Air where i obtained my C.A.A. airframe and engine engineers licences. I ended up as Chief Engineer with Channel Express Air Services for 11 years from where I retired. Unfortunately for reasons unknown I do not have any photos from Jever except the official Sqn photos, in those I am in the 2nd row from the back, 5th in from the right as you look at the photo. I have looked at the Jever web site in fact Bill Webb contacted me he was radar mech on 93." |

Notes: Svc No 032557. Eric Pigdon's Notes 23 Nov04. Neil Hampton, New Zealand Air Force, maybe Australian. Think he got married to a SAFA gal. K Senar saw him New Zealand a year or so ago. Ken Senar told me 8Apr05 that Neil Hampton, RAAF, on detachment to 93 for a year had a similar experience (Flame out). I think he married one of the BFES teachers while he was there. I had a chance meeting with him some years ago when flying back from Australia on a QANTAS 747. He was skipper for the leg from Bahrein to London. I made myself known to him and I sat on the dickie seat in his 'Office' chatting for a while. He is now retired and, I think, living near Sydney. He was a senior QANTAS Captain. He appears in the photo of 93 Sqn in Larry Milbery's book 'The Canadair Sabre'. 28Jul54 F540 says from Perth, W Australia. 23Aug54 broke his wrist playing Basketball. |

Notes: Click to see a picture of the crash site of 112 Sqn Vampire FB5 VZ115 on the overshoot at Jever. During a practice for an impending visit by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh the engine failed when in the circuit at Jever. The pilot, Fg. Off. Ray Hancock, misjudged his approach to a forced landing on the airfield and passed the runway caravan, going the wrong way, at about 200 knots. The aircraft disintegrated and and Ray was lucky to escape with little more than a broken arm. - 17Mar53. |

Notes: Fg.Off. wef 9Nov53. Eric Pigdon's Notes 21May05. I think black Hannah received his two black eyes when in the bar at Jever just before we went to Sylt. He managed to fall off a bar stool with hands in pockets, this resulted in a very twisted broke nose. He picked himself up went to the toilet pulled and straightened his nose and return to the bar and continued with his drinking. The next morning he had two shiners. Think he left late 55. From Ron Gray's Notes (21Mar06) "I thought that the 'black' was as a result of Bob's activities, as in 'putting up a'. Seem to remember when I'd only arrived at Jever and the squadrons returned from exercise, Bob had a mid-air collision. He hit the silk but the other chap did not make it. Met him at 2 TAF HQ when I was invited by the AOC to discuss the autobahn incident. (Click to see a full report). Bob saw me in the mess and announced to all and sundry that "Ron has been appointed O/C of autobahn windsocks." |

Notes: Svc No 3134367. Eric Pigdon's Notes 23 Nov04. Bob Harper, Mid-late 53 to 55 on the cutback. From Ron Gray's Notes (21Mar06): "Dave and I went through training to wings at PERSHORE. Met up again at JEVER. Dave was posted to Sylt and that was the last I heard of him. He had a chequered life, falling asleep on his motorcycle of all things on the way back to KIRTON LINDSEY; smashed up his beautiful Austin Seven soft top at PERSHAW on an icy road, after taking home a nurse whom had slept over with him. I brought him back on my BSA. Incidentally, we shared the same room and there was another occasion of a sleep over only I woke up this time and had difficulty getting back to the land of nod. He fixed me up with a blind date with this one but she failed to turn up. Dave had a high alcohol tolerance and challenged me to a sherry contest at our Dining Out from PERSHORE. He lost 22 to 19. The Station Commander Gp. Capt. G.R. Howie DSO, leader of the opposing team in the broom shank tug-of-war and tried to sabotage me by pouring a pint over my head. He got two back and we won anyway. All in all it was a good night. |

Primary School Pupil. |
About Aug58. |
Dec61 boarding at prince Rupert School, Wilhelmshaven until 62. |
Notes: I lived in Jever about 58-59, and went to Prince Rupert School in Wilhelmshaven, after attending the primary school just outside the Main RAF Jever Gate. My father was the NAAFI manager of the Jever shop at the time, and seeing pictures of the Astra cinema on your website brought memories flooding back to me - 'Good ol' Fred' was the cry of the whole place whenever Tom & Jerry cartoons came on (on account of Fred Quimby, as I recall, being the producer of those films, or something similar!) I also recall 'Black Smith' being there, as my father had occasional meetings with him. We also lived in the adjoining house to the Rev. Hewitt Wilson in Beethovenstrasse - I sang regularly on Sundays in Hewitt's choir - mornings and evenings - until the church burned down. Strangely, that's what also happened to the church in Jever town, as I recall rushing to possibly lend a hand in helping to save it! I swam in the pool on the camp itself - yes, I remember it just as your photos show! - there were holes too, in the wooden 'barrier' wall between the men's and ladies' changing rooms, which most of us peered through at some time or other! Before moving to Beethovenstrasse my family's first accommodation at Jever was in an 'H' block near the end of the runway - quite a noisy place! We had curtains as room dividers! I have attended several PRS reunions both in the UK and in Wilhelmshaven (there is an active society for past pupils). Degree in Archtiecture from Cardiff University, UWIST 69, architect for Buckinghamshire County Council until 2007. Now retired. I am only acquainted with Heather Watson - though not at the time, only more recently! She did the translations so well at the TWA memorial unveiling a few years back which I mentioned. It is interesting you say that Jo Watson, your wife, was head of Howe Girls. I was in Howe Boys - at the Bonteheim site! Sadly, of all the school buildings, this one no longer exists, having been demolished some time ago and replaced by a block of flats! Frankly, I'm surprised most of the other buildings have lasted as long as they have, but I guess all their days are now numbered as they gradually fall into complete ruin. |

RAF Regiment Signals. |

Notes: Svc No: 2596599. SAC Roy (Bennie) Hogben National Service signals with the RAF Regiment. I am 73 and cannot remember either my flight or squadron (I think it was 4 Flight /33LAA Squadron) do you have access to old records? If you go to Jever history/social life, the first photo for 1954 is of the camp band, I am the un-named trumpet player and Simon Raynaud is on guitar. He too was in the Regiment, Corporal MT and we are still in touch. I have about 20/30 old, small, dark photos of the band, the squadron on exercises to Putlos and I think Delmandhorst as well as individuals, all named, all doing the daft thing NS conscripts got up to. I will send them with as many details I can remember if you would like to put them on the site. I am not computer literate. There is a bit about Tony Leedham (pianist) on the site and I have a photo of the cover of the LP we made, although sadly I've not got the record. I did contact Tony Bennet, also a band member for a short time, but he only vaguly remembered me. The Flight Seargeant of our signals group that used to operate from the Op's Block was FS Dickson. There was a Flying Officer Brierton and a Wing Commander Bell, - not much I know but it was an awfully long time ago. |

Notes: Ken Senar remembers him e-mail 24Sep05. 2 children lived in OMQs. Ken writes:" Mr Arthur Hull, Chief Met Officer, left Jever after his tour of duty at about the time I was being invalided out of the RAF following my Borgentreich stint (he must have had a longish tour). I was at RAF Hospital Wegburg, not that far from Wildenrath, as a walking patient when I spotted Arthur being wheeled in on a stretcher. He has slipped a disc in his spine and was in some agony. A day or two later I got more of a story from him: He was on his way home to the UK with loaded car and wife and 2 children on board and, when checking the load on his roof rack, his back 'went' on him. There he was in hospital with wife and kids and car en route home with nowhere to for them to stay. What a hell of a fix to be in! I was given leave to go back to Borgentreich to pack up my gear (that was all I was allowed to do) and returned to Wegburg about a week later. Poor Arthur was still on his back, sick with worry. I was sent to the UK Casevac in a Hastings the next day." |

On 23Jun15 Ian wrote: "I ws an Air Wireless Mechanic with No 2 Squadron from June 1959 until mid-1860 when our section was centralised to service radio equipment in Nos. 2, 4 and 93 squadrons. Near to handover in 1961 I was transferred to Sylt wen on close down there I finished my tour in Germany. My most memorable recollection of Jever was when Flt Lt Bill Sheppard took me on a flight in the two seater Hunter trainer. For someone who had never flown before it was awesome." |

93 Sqn Airframe Mechanic |
Early 53. |
Aug55. |
Notes: Svc No: 3514179. I joined the R.A.F. for 3 years as an Airframe Mechanic. I did my training at St Athans and posted to R.A.F Jever early 1953. I first worked on Vampires Mk 9 and then these were replaced by Sabres (I believe they were half American and half Canadian). About Jun55 we had three Hawker Hunters come onto the squadron - we still had Sabres. I was demobbed in Aug55 at the rank of Senior Aircraftsman. An Officer who asked me to rejoin with the promise of a Corporal Technician's course was sadly killed in his aircraft when I was on leave in 1954. Born in 1934. There was some famous pilots in charge of R.A.F. Jever from the war. One I believe was Group Captain Powel-Sheddon. I played rugby for the station all over Germany. One of the highlights was playing at the Berlin Stadium in a cup match. (we lost) A great time. We were trained by a Wing Commander who was an ex-Scottish International. I always remember he said "I must tell you all about the 'Dirty Tricks' so you are aware what to avoid." I left the R.A.F. married and worked on a Farm for 18 months and then in 1957 I joined the Dorset Police Force where I rose the rank of Detective Inspector in charge of all Fingerprint,Photography and Forensic for the whole of Dorset Area. I attended nearly 40 murder scenes and was awarded the Queens Police Medal for Distinguished Service in the New Years Honours of January 1987. I have also the long Service and Good Conduct medal and eight Commendations for arrests and saving life. I also received from Squadron Leader Browne about a year after I had left the R.A.F. a Certificate of Merit signed by him and other officers for the work on the Squadron. This came out of the blue. I think it was about the time Squadron Leader Browne had been awarded the Distinguishing Flying Cross. Valerie and I had a boy Richard (now a Police Inspector at Poole) and girl Sally(Accountancy). We have five grandchildren and one Great Grandchild. I hope I have not bored you but I look back on a memorable time with 93 Sqnn and felt I had to tell you how one of the Old boys got on. When we won the Ground to Air firing cup at R.A.F Sylt. To receive the cup we had a parade at Jever in freezing conditions and the Band froze up just as the A.O.C.'s Dove Aircraft landed. The A.O.C. inspected us and because I am 6' 4" in height he said to me " I bet it is cold up there airman" and I replied "I bet it is cold down where you are sir". Humph.! |
