Notes: On 22Jun15 Bill wrote: "For my sins I was posted to Jever on or about the 22 January 1955 as a 21 year old corporal ex Halton apprentice. Since passing out from Halton I had spent my initial adult posting at Lindholme on Lincolns and Varsities a number of whose aircrew and groundcrew had spent their time in the RAF during the war. To be posted to 93, a jet fighter sqn under the then Sqn Ldr Des Browne was what one might call a baptism of fire. For groundcrew; and I am sure aircew alike, it wasn't an easy life because the 'boss' had such exacting standards that we all had to meet. However, I don't regret it for the world. During my time on 93 I saw the departure of the Sabre, the coming and going of the Hunter 4 and we were flying the Hunter 6 when I returned home in July '57." |

Station Adjutant |

Notes: Ken Senar remembers him: He and Bunny (his wife) may have had two children, but I can't be that certain. They lived in married quarters just outside the main gate. Les had an interest in model railways and I gave him some books on the subject. He did not have a layout during the time I knew him. Bunny enjoyed swimming in the outdoor pool on the camp. As Station Adjutant, when he went on leave someone else had to form up the CO's Saturday morning Parade, and that fell to me as Flying Wing Adjutant, otherwise we had little other formal working contact other than to liaise on matters of administration over the telephone between my Boss, Wg.Cdr. West, o/c Flying Wing, and his Boss, the Station Commander. I seem to remember that he wore a flying brevet, possibly that of a Navigator. He also had medal ribbons but can't say which ones. Assuming this to be true he would be probably 10 to possibly 15 years my senior and that would put him in his late 80s or early 90s in terms of his age as of now. (I am 78). I would say he was about 5' 9" tall and had fair(ish) hair. He did not wear glasses. I think he was at Jever when I arrived in late 1953, and I'm pretty sure he was still there in the same job when I left in late summer 1955. We always got on well together. |

If you read the story about Roy Rimington who was officer in charge of the gliding club, the old German who worked for him on the gliders later worked for me in the paint shop and a very good worker he was too. Next door to us at number 11 lived Sgt Dave Hunt and family. He worked in SHQ admin. He later went to Marham where he was PA to the CO. He now lives in Canada. I think I have a photo of the glider in the background in one of my family snaps. After a few years we went back to Jever (1984) when the German air force was operating with Tornados. We spoke to a German NCO who was hoping to buy the house opposite us when he retired. |

Notes: Transferred to 14 squadron during their detatchment from Gutersloh. Jever was my first operational posting after trade training at Weeton. My posting to 14 sqn was the best thing that ever happened to me as I found squadron life was far better than any support work. Spent best part of a year at Jever in which time I joined The Riding club, The aeromodellers club and the Gocart club. Saw Grp Capt Smith turn a cart over at speed and get away with no injuries. The Riding club was run by an ex Prussian Cavalry Officer, all the saddles were Prussian cavalry saddles and the training was very hard, after loosing control of my horse and galloping around the paddock in the wrong direction I was thrown off the back of the horse doing a somersault and landing on my hands and knees, only my pride hurt until I was loudly berated in German for doing everything wrong on the gentlest horse in the club, thats when I left to fly model aeroplanes. |

Notes: Played a lot of rugby at Jever. I was first posted to 101 S.U. in the latter part of 1959 as a R.A.F Police Dog Handler. I was billited at Jever, and when my wife joined me in Oct.59, I got a married quarter at Oldenburg. In 1961 I was made i/c the Dog Section at Jever and had a quarter down Schumaker St. I think it was No. 25. as I am now 73 my memory is'nt all it was. As you went in through the camp gates and turned right I remember the M.T. section was on your right and my Dog Unit was higher up on the left, right again the swimming pool. I follow the Jever Web site and was wondering ,has the Dog Section and Swimming pool now gone?. When I was down Schumaker st. Flt/Lt 'Paddy' Hine lived just across the road from me, he was my boss at the time, and Sgt. Les Lorking was my Police Sergeant. I left Jever in Dec. 1961 on posting to R.A.F. Marham until 65; then West Raynham until retired 67. 29 years in Prison Service as dog handler retiring again in 1994. |

Notes: Coreen Hayes, Nat's daughter tells us on 2Sep09: My father did his National Service there around 1953-55. He met Frau von Randow's eldest daughter at some point and they married in 1956 after my Dad was demobbed. My Grandmother also lived opposite the Schutzenhof in a flat during the 1970's. I cam remember as a child going into the forested areas to look for mushrooms and being bitten by mosquitos. My Grandmother sadly passed away several years ago while she was living in the centre of Jever. I think my Father joined up from RAF Abingdon as he was (and still is) living in Banbury in Oxfordshire at the time. His name is Ivan Lofthouse, although he may have gone by the nickname of "Nat" after a famous footballer of the time. He joined the Oxfordshire police force and served with them in and around Banbury until retirement. |

RAF Regiment Exchange Officer at GAF Jever. |
About 2013. |
Early 2015. |
Notes: On 20Oct14 Charlie wrote:"Pse allow me to introduce myself. My name is Flt Lt Charlie Lynn and I am currently the RAF Exchange Officer serving at Fliegerhorst Jever in Schortens. The Stn is currently the home to the Objektschutzregiment der Luftwaffe "Friesland" - the german equivalent of the RAF Regiment. For the last 6 years the RAF has enjoyed a productive and successful exchange programme with the Luftwaffe and I am the third and current incumbant of this post. I am posted early next year to RAF Waddington. The Regiment has been working for the last couple of years to research the history of this fabulous Stn and as part of that research we came across the website Jever Steam Laundry which has provided us with some fascinating information and images of the Stn over the last 50 years or so. The intention is, in the short to medium term, to open a small museum dedicated to the history of Jever. To that end it is the intention of the Project Offr, Oberstabsfeldwebel Köpke to contact you to further explore opportunities and resources to assist in this on-going and exciting project. In the interim, I wanted to let you know (perhaps you already do) that the connection between the Royal Air Force and Jever is still alive and well and should be for the foreseeable future. I was priviledged to be here last year to witness the very last flying operations from Jever which involved the return of the last 12 F-4 Phantoms from Jagdgeschwader 71 (the Ritchofen Geschwader) which were brought here from Wittmund to be deactivated and scrapped and the last sortie of an A-4 Skyhawk from the airfield. The airfield has now been fully deactivated as an active operating strip. Nevertheless, the future of the Stn is still bright with a current massive investment programme which will see the expansion of the unit to accommodate all elements of das ObjSRgtLw by 2018. This project will see the investment of around €55m in infrastructure and training facilities." |

Notes: Eric Pigdon's Notes 23 Nov04. Robbie Lynn Goblin - as was Birdy Biggs, he was a Master Mariner, but was very short. Tom Balfour told me they were instructing together at Acklington and both ended up running the Nav Section as PNI's. Robbie left the service late 68/early 69 and emigrated to Australia for a job with hovercraft. He then went back to sea with his Masters Ticket and ended up as a Captain on supertankers. Has been retired and living in Gawler for 30 years. Mick Ryan spoke to him and Ida on the telephone 8Jan06. Both very well. Son Robert into circuit board manufacture, daughter in Greece. Lives just round the corner from Bush Barrey and did not know it. |

Notes: On 4Feb14 John wrote: "I live in North Devon and as I walk out of our bungalow in the morning I look across Bideford Bay at what was RAF Chivenor (weather permitting!). I do remember you from 93 as the Central Armoury was next to your hangar. Pilots used to "visit" to check the harmonisation of the gun packs. We had to restrain Jeremy Hall from jumping on it to test it's stability after we had set it up!! I met up with him at Chivenor when he was a Wg Cdr on a course just before his untimely death' really saddened me." "Loved every minute of time spent at Jever, especially winning 2TAF cup against LARRBRUCH in 1961. Jever was my first posting after leaving apprentice training at RAF Halton. After the usual interesting journey I arrived there as a brand new Junior Technician in September 1959. After arriving on the first night I pressed my 'best blue', 'bulled' my shoes and presented myself at SHQ to start my arrival procedure. The Station Warrant Officer got hold of me and detailed me to act as escort to an airman who was to appear before Wg Cdr Cleaver. I can't remember what the charge was, I thought it minor, but the Wing Commander remanded it to the Group Captain. When the accused heard this he almost collapsed and was shaking as we marched out. I wondered what the problem was and then I heard of our CO's reputation! I was doing my first ever Duty Armourer in November 1959. This entailed being in the Sation Armoury during the dayform a week servicing small arms and nosing around the ejection seat bay and ASF. At about 0200 hours one morning I was shaken awake by the Orderly Sergeant and told to report to Gp Capt Smith and don't wash or shave! Panic, I dressed quickly and was outside Block 35 when I realised that apart from his office in SHQ I had no idea where he would be! I noticed a lot of activity and lights in the direction of ATC and shot off over there, some friendly soul directed me to the OPs Block and I entered saluting frantically into that great man's domain. The question he then asked me was "How many distresss flares do we hold?" (I had not realised until then that Alistair West was missing). I replied that I didn't know but I would find out and report back. Luckily an explosives storeman who worked in the bomb dump was in the next billet to me. I got him up, went over to the bomb dump, counted every type of flare we had from the storage records. I then reported back to the CO with a list and handed it over. I got a "Well done Airman", report to Station Flight to help out, which I did. I was there for a few days supporting Station Flight while the search for Alistair West continued. The first AF/BF I ever did in my career was on a Shackleton full of Lindholme Gear. It scared me witless but with lots of help I managed. As a follow up to this event - aircraft wreckage was 'netted' by a German fisherman at a place called Busum which was North of Hamburg. I was one of the party sent with a Magirus and trailer to bring it back. It turned out to be the oleo leg of a WWII Whitley bomber. The fidherman wanted the money for the damage caused to his nets. Stan Cobb told him he would be back up on payday! We had an interesting night stop in Hamburg, my first trip to the Reeperbahn. A couple of us chanced upon a floor show consisting of naked ladies cavorting in a foam filled tank. I soon found out that mixed bathing was actively encouraged! I wonder what made Jever so unique, its isolation, everything worked, great working conditions, the sports facilities. My pals talk about this and the general concensus is a homogeneous mixture of airmen stationed there, National Service, short term regulars and like us 'green' junior technicians - we all had something to contribute and learn. The last dealings I had with Gp Capt Smith was in Sep/Oct 1961 at the final closure. A closing down competition was being held at the GC. I was asked to play but responded that the section at Gutersloh wouldn't release me, he (the Gp Capt) said to me "Tell them your'e playing with me." I was brought back to Jever from Gutersloh in a staff car to compete! Mind you, I had to go back in a refueller! Gp Capt Smith didn't live too far away from me here in Devon and when he passed away I attended his funeral. There was a big turn out including a couple from one of his wartime squadrons (151). As the cortege left the church there was a flypast by Hawks in the "missing man" formation. A fitting tribute to the great man and nothing more than he deserved." |

Notes: Eric Pigdon's Notes 23 Nov04. Maycock Fred 54-56? 4 Sqn. Ken Senar remembers him in e-mail 24Sep05. "Fg Off 'Fred' Maycock' of 4 Sqn lived in the top-right front room of our officers' block, on the corner. He was a good pianist and was keen on sound and radio receiving equipment. He used to annoy us somewhat when he turned up his gear to max volume (several tens of watts power) and deafen us, actually shaking the block with the sound. He had me help him string up an aerial from the corner of the block near his room to a tall tree across the road. This was one Saturday afternoon. I climbed the tree, to quite a height, with a line tied round my waist when, to our horror, Gp Capt Tom Prickett drove slowly underneath in his car. I froze. Fred tried to look as innocent as he could, but nothing was said. We strung up the aerial and Fred's gear worked to better effect as a result. On returning from tea the following Monday we found that the aerial had disappeared. Nothing was ever said! Fred also wired his sound equipment output to the newly installed station tannoy system but was disappointed that no noise came out of any of the speakers! There was a kerfuffle in our block late one Saturday night after a drinking session. There was horse-play in the room opposite Fred's and next to mine (occupant's name not remembered) when the wash basin was torn from the wall, severing the hot and cold supply pipes. Said occupant found himself found himself with a finger up each orifice in an attempt to stop two powerful jets of water, one cold, the other uncomfortably very hot, from flooding the whole block while yelling his head off for someone to turn the supplies off at some unknown master valves. This went on for about an hour until, somehow, the flow was staunched, I think, with whittled sticks hastily torn from some nearby tree and rammed into the pipes. Officers and gentlemen? Jan54 from Wahn to Geilenkirchen 25Oct55. |
Jan57, Not Jever. |
Notes: Recently Alan added the following to the RAF Marham site: "Hello there Shiny 2, I have been scouring the net for months looking for you and bumped into you yesterday,at last. I was a pilot on 2 from Jan 1954 to Jan 1957, name's Alan Middleton, I am now 69 and retired, been living in Melbourne, Australia for the last 34 years. I served under Bob Weighill, of rugby fame, and "Bunny" Mortley who took over from Bob in 1956 just before we converted to Swifts. Bunny's last flying job had been Dakotas on the Berlin airlift and for a while there he was like a fish out of water trying to adjust to a 400 knot increase and a slightly lower cruising altitude! My wife and I visited you in 1992 whilst on a holiday trip back home, but you were all off on an armament practice somewhere in North Africa from memory. I did get to look over a Tornado though thank you. It would have been great to look over your scrapbooks and revisit old places and old friends no doubt stored in there. I served at Wahn from 1/1/54 to 25/10 55 when we moved to Geilenkirchen. At Wahn we had a C flight of Belgian AF F84G's, about 6 a/c and pilots from memory. They were supposed to be learning about TacR but spent most of their time at 35000ft doing long range nav exercises!! They became the nucleus of the RBAF's 1st TacR Squadron. I remember the reintroduction of Sqn. markings in 1954 and how we pilots scoured the records for examples of pre war markings. From memory the current black and white with triangles is a composite of some of the various marks used over the early years. It would be true to say that 1954's markings were new in design and we had to have them approved by Air Ministry. In one of the attached photos there is a shot of "Hereward" our St.Bernard mascot in 1956. He was officially recognized and was on the Airmen's Mess ration list. We used to have a daily Duty dog officer, who's tasks included collecting his food and feeding him, and allowing him to sleep in the DDDO's room. He snored and eventually was so big there wasn't enough room for him and you on the same bed!! We had to get rid of him unfortunately. He began to feel the urge and as he was as big as a donkey by then he was a real danger to all the bitches on the Station! We found a good home for him with a German gent who bred St.Bernards and Hereward found satisfaction! There's also a photo of a loose formation of Meteor 9's doing a dummy run for a "2" picture before we lost them. It was decided that we could fit 4 in the line abreast at the bottom and also tighten up the whole formation. Fortunately for me I was Duty Officer on the 15th when they did just that and found that 4 abreast take more room than 4 in echelon! Chas Boyer's port wing tip penetrated Tony Winship's starboard engine nacelle and pushed off the HP Cock for him. Chas knew he was in trouble straight away as his ailerons jammed, but poor old Tony couldn't figure out what was going on for a while as he skidded along on one engine. All this at 300ft over the Airfield, in close formation, with 3 and 234 Squadrons watching on critically. Embarrassing. Of our pilots, I believe Manx Kelly made a name for himself as an aerobatic display pilot in civvy street, Ross Colwill flew with the Black Arrows when he was repat. Dicky Green was killed testing the Flying Bedstead at Farnborough, Tony Winship was going to command the first TSR2 Squadron before it was scrubbed in 59, and I believe he had asked for most of us ex 2 pilots to form the Squadron. Bob Weighill died a couple of years ago, leading the English Rugby Union to the end I believe. As for every one else I have no idea where they are or if they are, but they were a great bunch of friends and comrades and I often think back to those days when we upended the odd Carlsberg or two. If you have any contacts from my era please let me know and if you have any queries regarding the pictures. I have lots of time on my hands and heaps of memories to bore you all with! P.S. When I left I was asked to contribute to the purchase of a sword for the Standard Bearer. I was told that my name would be engraved on the hilt together with the others who contributed. Do you still have this sword? |

Outer Basket Brother of Dickie Millward. Engineer on 2(AC) Sqn Laarbruch. |
|
|
Notes: Engineer in the RAF for 39 years, retiring in 2001. He served on II(AC) proper from 76 to 79 and peripherally again in 81 to 85. He held a PPL from 78 until 91 and has over 2,000 hrs in gliders before he was 'grounded' in 91. (My power flying is limited to the same sort of trip as you. It became too regulated and expensive to keep up the Ppl. However, I then took a lengthy sabattical from aviation from 1990 onwards because I was told my High Blood Pressure was a "no no". In about 2014 I was told the rules had changed and it would be a simple task to get back to solo standard in gliding if the Blood Pressure was under control...after all I still had a driving licence! So I got back into it. I will carry on solo as long as I can.) One of his proudest moments was when he checked Dickie out to fly gliders at the Two Rivers Club at Laarbruch. He now works as a "Human Factors Engineer" at Martin-Baker Aircraft. Makers of bespoke ejection seats for gentlemen! Geoff further added on 31Jan18:"I left the RAF in 2001 and worked for Martin Baker till 2011. My last project with Martin-Baker Aircraft was developing the Seat Survival Kit for F-35 Lightning II. Now fully retired, I `community volunteer` at Bicester Gliding Centre where I still fly and have a share in a K6cr classic glider." |

Notes: neil his son wrote on 4Apr12; "My father was Flight Sgt. John (always known as Jack) Moran and was stationed at Jever twice in his career. I remember both times very well, although I was only 5 years old the first time we were there. My mother Sheila's address book gives dates as follows - From August 1953 until May 1954 we lived at number 81 Schumaker Strasse From November 1956 until March 1959 we lived at number 65 Schumaker Strasse. I have a sister Lynn who is two years younger than me and my youngest sister Gail was born at RAF Rostrop in February 1954, while we were at Jever the first time. Our neighbours who lived at number 67 Schumaker Strasse were Flight Sgt. Johnny Taylor, his wife Hilda (Hilly) and son Neil. I have no exact dates for this, but it was very similar to ourselves. |

Notes: Peter wrote on 5Mar09: "I served in the Squadron's electrical section under a mustachioed sergeant whose name I forget and Corporal Harrop. Although I was a reluctant national serviceman (our 'home service' pay in Germany was a disgrace - but British cigarettes, chocolate and coffee were still useful as alternative currency), I had some great times at Jever. I recall with pleasure my particular friends Alan Simmons, Johnny Stanbridge, my namesake Claude 'Pedro' Newton, Cpl. Kirk and his inebriated dog Anker, Cpl Roberts, an affable storeman named Golding and a right tearaway named Woods, whose father Stanley Woods was a TT rider in the 30s. I also remember with cloudy affection several officers and NCOs including COs Browne and Minnis, the adjudant Clayton-Jones, a Rhodesian pilot who was killed during a display at Spangdalem, Flight Sergeant O' Neill, and Flight Lieutenant Birdy Biggs (I was down at Battle Flight at the time of the unfortunate ladder incident). It seems that earlier he and I were both students at Dartford Grammar School at about the same time. In those days I liked an ale or two, and recall welcome visits to pubs like the Gastatte zum Bluhmenkohl, Tne Geldener Engel and one nicknamed "The Tittenkeller" and the annual Schutzenfests (sorry, I can't superimpose the umlauts). Other pleasures included well-paid and fed baby-sitting chores for married families, jazz record sessions in my room, with somw German fans in Wilhelmshafen, and in the spare rooms in our billet attic (which was sometimes used for more nefarious purposes -nudge nudge), detachments to Sylt, Leeuwarden and Munchen-Gladbach, and a relaxing month in the military hospital at Bad Zwischenhahn, south of Oldenberg - and always those ever-impressive aerobatic displays by the Golden Arrows. After leaving the Squadron in June 1957 and a final month wasted in the UK on a stupid nuclear fire-fighting course, I completed my broken electrical apprenticeship at Tate & Lyle and in 1960 emigrated to Australia. I worked for 26 years with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission/Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation during which time I took degrees at Macquarie University, eventually retiring as Scientific Editor (Scientist 4) and since have resurfaced as an academic linguist (history of Aboriginal language studies). I started writing articles for Tate & Lyle Times on life in the RAF before I got to Jever and recall being rebuked (mildly) by Sqdn Ldr Minnis for not getting permission to publish - at his request I gave him copies for a possible Sqdn History (I still have a full set, plus a number of photos). I have lived a writer's life ever since (poetry, fiction, essays, biography, history, book, record and theatre reviews (especially jazz) and a variety of editing roles). Ironically (speaking as a lapsed Englishman), in 1985 I was seconded as scientific editor to the Royal Commission on British Nuclear Tests in Australia, a very hot and messy potato Down Under at the time. Now 73 and semi-retired in the Blue Mountains (but still writing), west of Sydney, I am thinking of visiting Jever with my wife Judy next year. I googled "Jever" and unexpectedly came across this site. What a beauty! If there are any former 93 "Squadronaires" from 55-57 who remember me or are in this neck of the wood, I'd be delighted to hear from them. Peter further wrote on 10Mar09: "We have just bought our replacement home in the Blue Mountains, 60 km west of Sydney, having lived for about 40 years in the now over-gentrified harbourside suburb of Balmain (just west of the Harbour Bridge). The new place is best described as a work in progress, so sorting papers and other memorabilia is a slow process. So you live at Sevenoaks, not so far from my old home at Bexleyheath. I went to Dartford Grammar from 1946 to 1951 - Mick Jagger enrolled there three years after I left. Recently he gave the school several million quid to erect an auditorium on the site of the old school hall. About 18 months ago my sister Sheila, who lives at Welling, went there to a concert and found herself sitting next to the great Humprhrey Lyttelton, as a result of which he sent me a copy of his last CD. Sadly he died about a year back. A great loss of a fine musician, raconteur, writer and broadcaster. Among the entries on the RAF Jever site is mention of a small jazz group at the air base - I don't think that it was there during my time, because I would surely have known about it. The only muso I knew there was an LAC named Fred from tech wing who played bass. I played some trumpet and earlier had served in the band at RAF Hednesford - but chronic bronchial asthma put paid to that by the time I reached Australia. Other memories. After seeing the film Picnic at the Astra Cinema I wrote on behalf of some of my Squadron colleagues to Kim Novak for an autographed photo. No idea what happened to it. I also remember that our Welfare Officer was Flt Lieut. Busby. When I arrived on the Squadron in December 1955, he gave us a pep talk on ET rooms, some of the seamier traps around Jever and warned us about friendly young ladies who sometimes stood at the edge of the forest with blankets on their arm (I kid you not). One place that was gazetted out of bounds was Nr 2 Blaustrasse. During a visit by members of an American aerobatic team, some of its ground crew asked for the address of the local "cat house"; we gave them the said Nr 2 Blaustrasse. Squadron intelligence was clearly lacking; rather than being confronted by "women of mass distraction" the occupants were elderly pensioners with a pet cat. The Yanks took it with good grace. I also recall that a young pilot was killed when he ejected from a Hunter and did not get tipped out of his Martin-Baker seat; apparently the barostatic device was faulty, a problem that led to the temporary grounding of all 2 TAF planes for a while. [Dave Young on 98 Sqn.] When I was on the Squadron we still had a couple of Sergeant Pilots on the books, one of whom crash landed on one of the Frisian Islands. [Forced landing on the islands was Ginger Ratcliffe.] We may still have been running Sabres at the time. I recall too that 93 Squadron pilots changed their bone domes for deerstalkers when visiting other places; 118 Squadron pilots wore bowlers and carried rolled umbrellas. One of my most graphic memories was of a London barrow boy whose name I forget; he used to come with Fred to some of our jazz record sessions. I think he was also a clerk on tech wing. He was going on leave and asked if he could visit my mother and bring back something for me. I asked him to collect some of my record collection. I heard no more for weeks until a couple of "snowdrops" brought him back under arrest for being AWOL - he had my records with him when he did a runner with his girl friend and was located camping under a pier at some seaside town. Some time later (after we were demobbed) he contacted Alan Simmons and myself to withess his marriage at Slough Registry Office. When we got there he sheepishly said that he'd been pipped at the post; the baby was born on the previous night. We were invited to the christening at which I became bladdered, got my head down in the back of a parked lorry and on awakening found myself northbound on the A1. That was the last time I saw him or Alan. There is a coda to the story. When he visted my mother he offered to take all my suits off her hands for a small price - a proper Steptoe!" |

Notes: On 30Jun11 Michael wrore: "I served as an ADO in 101 SU from sometime in late 1957 - transferring in from Goch and Uedem - until I was demobbed in early 1959. I suspect that the time was one of the most formative of my life. You, of course, were with one of flying squadrons: we, on the other hand, were a mutinous, resistant bunch of overly educated young National Serviceman. There could have been few units in the RAF at that time in which bridge was the major leisure pastime. There could have been even fewer units that had members of the nobility serving in the ranks. There were probably none who had Andy Allison in their midst. Andy it was who whimsically invented the "flying bed." This was a conceit (in the best C16 sense) inspired by a devotion to the Goon Show. If one shared in this folie,.then one could get an official license plate for one's bed so that, when it flew, it would be authorized. Some also manufactur4ed exhaust pipes and steering wheels to provide suitable additions to their "flying beds." I remember one occasion in which some twenty or more beds were "moved" out of Block Fiersig" into the road outside for a parade, and pictures were taken. It was also the case that Andy's persuasive genius allowed our CO - Tiger Shaw - to have his own bedplate. The Tiger would live with most things from his unruly lot as long as we won all the 2TAF competitions for efficiency and athletics. I found your site only yesterday and was delighted to relive those times, now so long ago. But without mention of Andy those years are very much incomplete when it comes to 101 SU. When retired one no longer has titles, unless one is an ordinand or a commisioned officer. I am no longer Professor; my doctoral address is only to distinguish myself from a man of the same first and last names who runs hotels, and successfully, judging by the references on Google." And again on 3Jul11: "I confess that I have not been in contact with Andy Allison since sometime in 1962 or 63. As with many others serving in 101 SU, he was brilliant; doubtless, if he chose, he would have gone far in insurance or any other activity. I, for example, was a librarian in my early years of qualification. After finishing my first "letters" I went to the USA in order to research and write a thesis for a "fellowship" of what was then The Library Association. All this eventuated in me falling love with an American woman, and going on to do a PhD at the University of Wisconsin in Social Psychology. Thereafter, it was 30 years at St. Mary's University in Halifax Nova Scotia, ending up as Professor of Sociology. It's been a good life. Two jobs that I loved and much time to think and write. I imagine that many of my peers at 101 SU will have had similarly productive and enjoyable lives. The Unit was a hotbed of bright human beings. Truth be told, most airmen of my acquaintance in 101 SU tolerantly regarded both our commisioned and non commisioned ranks as folk with whom to bear. But what did we know? Young, bright, ambitious, with no interest in the RAF - save demob - most of us felt delayed in our life plans by National Service. Long did I tell my students (in large lecture classes) how it was at Brockzetel in the early hours of the morning in 1958-59. All the night crew and our two officers were asleep. At that time, only two SACs were awake and on watch. One was in the radar reporting room: one was in the Air Defence Cabin. Usually that last was myself. I could do a better "officer's accent" in order to stand down night "battle flight" and stand up day "battle flight." Sometimes I wondered if the radar sites of Warsaw Pact countries were similary manned; that there were just four of us ordinary airman keeping the world safe (by doing nothing). Certainly, as I told my students, my experience of this portion of the Cold War - dramatically presented by the media and politicians as quite different - convinced me that being a pacificist was not such a bad idea. Today, I find myself in that place; a Quaker. I know nothing more about Andy Allison. I should be delighted to receive correspondence from any folk who might recognise my name from those years in Jever. But I do recognise that I may well not be the ideal person as part of the Jever Steam Laundry crew." |

Notes: In 1955, I was sent to Jever from Laarbruch, where my last job was to take G.S.Os by Ford Koln Coach to Weeze, Geldern & Krefeld railway stations after duty at 1700hrs. On one occasion one man remained on the coach and told me "you take me home" I told him "This is the end of line, I go back to flugplatz now" he replied "Flt Lt Black M.T.O say it ok you take me home". I was eventually guided to a narrow lane. "It ok turn down here." He assured me I could turn the coach around further down the lane, his haus was about one kilo down the road. "Danke" and he was gone, it was a nightmare, the lane went on and on, eventually I decided to attempt to turn the coach around. You can imagine what trees and bushes did to the paint work, and the relationship that ensued with the M.T.O. After twelve months I approached him with Queens Regulations, and he was legally bound to reinstate me but because of the heat I was posted to sunny Jever. "I am not short of drivers, why have you been sent here?" I was standing before my new boss Flt Lt Thomas (word had actually gone round that I was C.I.B. in disguise which I must admit I enjoyed), I told him the truth, he was a gentleman and I was given a clean slate. He was later replaced by Flt Lt Boothe another gentleman and then by Sqn Ldr (Dizzy) Gillespie.

140 SU, Ground Radio Fitter, Hooksiel. |
About 1964. |
About 1967. |
Notes: I was a Ground Radio fitter at a Decca Navigator Slave Station, situated in an air transportable cabin at Hooksiel 1964-67. My involvement with RAF Jever was when technically it was as a residential unit (after 1961). There were about 30 personnell based there, the married quarters around Schumacher strasse was the accomodation, myself being single and along with about 3/4 others had a married quarter to ourselves (a hard life). The school was still in use, which was the Station offices which comprised of a Flt Lt o.i.c, a typist and a 'Snowdrop',there was also a small M/T section. We ate in a mess at the end of the school. I'm sure some of your members will recall ex S.W.O Harry Costain who he was still around at that time being employed as a civvie in the NAFFI shop, full of humour but still maintaining a hidden air of authority and daily taking our money off us poor erks at lunchtime playing cards. My own workplace as a ground radio fitter was at Hooksiel which we travelled to daily. A memory of one of those journeys was when we won the world cup, we certainly let the locals know who the winners were on the way. We had to learn the sprache to have any form of social life but did have a small NAFFI which along with all the rest of the RAF camp buildings was outside the main gates (to the flugplatz). A really great time was had, with wonderfull memories. |

Sep57. |
Notes: Svc No: 5039480. David says: "Jever, where I spent the summer of '57.. the sun shone from dawn to dusk, and I worked all the night shifts I could so that I could spend the days in the pool, or cycling the forest trackways. The info on the Jever steam Laundry site filled me in on much fact that I had heard but never really understood about the station I was in a billett... may have been Block 40... the memory is a bit dim now... that looked out onto the runway... and I used to sit in the window writing letters home to my girlfriend... now my wife of 48 years.. and watch the Hunters take off and land. One evening, I decided to take a walk... I thought I would go and see what was on the other side of the airfield. There were Radar and Radio Aerials to be seen in the distance... anyway, I set off, looked to my left... there were no crash tenders by the control tower.. so no flying tonight, sort of thing. I got just past the point of no return.. just across the centre of the main runway.... strolling along, when I became aware of a high speed landrover bearing down on me...."Why are you walking out here airman... " "going for a walk..". "didn't you know it was night flying"... "'er,,, no..." " Well you'll have to walk round...". So that's what I did. It was quite a long way, but very interesting. I did it the other way, around, the runway extension way through the woods one evening, and nealy got knocked down by a Deer. No photo's... couldn't afford a camera in those days, and although I well remember faces of other members of 101 SU, I dont seem to recall names. I spent quite a lot of spare time with the dutch lads, even bowwowed one of their bicycles some days, and corresponded with one of them, Pop Meyer, for some years after Nat. Serv., but he died of Cancer 30 years ago. I had had vision troubles and Migraine ever since doing the Radar Operators part of the Fighter Plotter course at Middle Wallop, so one day when I couldn't go on shift, in late August I think, I went sick, and was Hospitalised to Rostrup, then Wegburg, and ultimately flown back to UK in a Hastings that flapped it's wings, ( I haven't flown since) to Wroughton from where I was given a Medical discharge in November 1957. I'm still suffering with Migraines to this day, have had two bad ones this week in fact, so have sort of been saddled with ill health rather. Still, I've worked all but a couple of years or so untill early retirement in 2001, after an Injury at work. I have been in the motor trade all my working life, my original occupation before her Majesty demanded my presence...!" |

Notes: I retired a number of years ago after a successful career in the electronics industry which included European Quality Director of a multi national Corporation and numerous projects across Germany, Canada and the USA with Honeywell and NCR and Marconi on the Nimrod project. Since retiring I have actively teamed up with Arthur Mackie a retired RAF pilot 1944 -1960 who designed the Royal Air Force tartan which we are promoting around the world. If any one recognises my name please advise them to go to www.kamrafa.co.uk to see a more recent photograph of me. A piece of the tartan flew in the lead Hawk at the 90th Anniversary of the RAF and the main table at the dinner was decorated with a RAF tartan runner. Many officers have ordered kilts/trews and wear them in the mess with permission from either the mess officer or more commonly the station commander. To increase our sales we have created a new business called MacTartan(UK) and have already been invited to RAF Leuchars with the hope that an article will appear in the RAF news hopefully with a picture of Arthur in a Tiger Moth. |

I had a sudden FLASH and wondered if there was anyone from the Riding Club who might be trying to contact other ex-members. A few days later I Googled Jever Riding Club, not expecting a lot, when to my surprise up popped your Website. On examination, again to my surprise and delight, I found pictures of some of my fellow members and to my wife’s delight some pictures of me! |

Notes: Bob says:"I served as Electrician air during my service having joined as a national service entrant in June 1951 but singned on for 4 years. stationed at:- Honington no 1 MTRU, St Athans 32 MU then 93 sqd Jever. Being a Jazz fan I always attended the jazz sessions in the Malcolm Club etc, and was pleasantly suprised to see the mention in your pages, I obviosly knew Tony Bennett, Tony Lambden (we called him "Shiney" short for shiney **** a nickname for drummers because of the "rear end" movement whilst playing) and Tony Leedham pianist. In fact Tony Leedham became a well known jazz pianist of international repute playing the clubs all over England. As a jazz pianist he was known as Tony Lee my wife and I used to go to many of his performances in Pubs and clubs as we could all over the country, sadly he passed away back in Nov 2004. After demob I worked as an Electrician in the Construction Industry mostly for Taylor Woodrow Construction (38 years), where I ended up as senior Electrical Engineer specialising in the mechanical /electrical plant division - any thing from a 5KVA generator up to massive Tower cranes and earthmoving equipment etc, came uder my departments control. I am now retired and living near Truro Cornwall." 19Sep10 Bob wrote: "2 years ago after finding the maintenance and gardening chores of our bungalow in Portsmouth becoming a burden we decided to 'sell up' and move into a retirement apartment in a Macarthy & Stone Developement down here in Camborne. This coincided with the hard drive crashing on my original pc. (lost all contact details etc) I have been back 'online' with a new PC for a while now and following many health set backs in the family, which culminated in the passing of my wifes stepbrother, 2 weeks ago from a brain tumour diagnosed back in December 2009, I am in position to 'catch up'. When I am able to sort out the necessary transfer prog I intend to send you a copy (DVD) of a video I took when a group of us 'old' Jever ground crew (1953/55 era) took a nostalgic trip to Jever back in about 2003. There will also be some stills I took during the trip. In the party were:- Andre Capy Electrician 4 Sqd, and Station Flight, Edward (Ted) Rockell instruments 93 Sqd, myself Electrician 93 Sqd, our respective Wives, and Hildegard Fust a German friend of my wifes from the John Lewis Partnership (where my wife was employed in the Company Secretary's office up until her early retirement) who acted as interpreter etc. Whilst we were loking at the Camp entrance, Hildegard was able to speak to someone at the Main Gate and eventually we were given a tour of the camp by a senior GAF Officer (no wives, no cameras !) Our trip started by flying into Bremen, collecting a People Mover from a rental company organised by a friend of Hildergards at her Lutheran Church in West London. Our 'Billet' was a very good Guest house I think the name was the Freesenhof in Wiefels ( I will confirm name when the DVD is produced) just to the North West of Jever Town.(a small world, Hildegard went to Church in Wiefels on the Sunday of our stay and she found she knew the priest, he had spent a short time at her church in London)." |
