INTRODUCTION |
|
|
|
|
1. The month proved highly successful all round, and the squadron reached its
flying target with a few days to spare. Weather throughout the period was good,
with only two days unflyable. In all, flying took place on nineteen days. Aircraft
serviceability remained high, despite modification programmes and manpower shortages. |

2. The squadron took part in two major exercises during the month. Exercise
"Gateman" proved good training value for the pilots engaged in it. On the last day
of the month, Exercise "Amled" provided an opportunity for P.I. training. The weather
over the exercise area was very poor and consequently no targets were allocated to the
squadron, and those aircraft on "standby" were scrambled for P.I.'s. The standard
of interceptions left much to be desired, and little benefit was apparent. |

4. Good weather throughout the month enabled the squadron to concentrate on the
training programme, with the result that High Level Combat, Low Level Strikes, Air
to Ground Firing and Night Flying each received plenty of attention.
5. In the high level role, Pair v. Pair combat training proved very successful and
some of the more junior pilots were given the opportunity of leading larger sections
in the air.
6. With the co-operation of the station G.L.O., a number of sorties were made
against ground targets. Notable amongst these were planned attacks on army formations
in Holland towards the end of the month. Unfortunately, only the first proved
successful.
However, all squadron pilots are now becoming quite proficient in the low level role
and excellent targets are provided.
7. The remainder of the low level training sorties carried out were for simulated
attacks on both army formations and buildings.
8. Four days Air to Ground Firing were completed at Ströhen Range.
9. Night flying took place four times during the month. |
