OPERATIONS
1. December was a depressing month in the Squadron's history. Not only was
the Squadron disbanded, but because of the marginal weather and the lack of suitable
diversions, very few flying hours were achieved. One flypast was flown in which
ten of No. 4 Squadron joined seven from No. 93, and flew impeccably
over Jever and Gutersloh. The disbandment parade was held in the Squadron hangar
on 30th December and the retiring Commander-in-Chief, Air Marshal Sir Humphrey
Edwardes-Jones, K.C.B., C.B.E., D.F.C., A.F.C., took a farewell salute of the
Squadron. At the end of the ceremony, the Squadron Standard was marched off and
handed, together with the Squadron's number plate, to 79 Squadron at Gutersloh.
The Squadron therefore reverts to the ground attack and reconnaissance role in
which it served during both World Wars. A total of 100 hours and 45 minutes were flown in 97 sorties. |
