1. OPERATIONS.
(a) Exercise Gate. A 2 day Army co-operation exercise was held on the 14th
and 15th involving units of the German Army and Air Force and the whole of 1
and 2 T.O.C. The Squadron flew 9 sorties against a well defended airfield
at Varrelbush and great value was derived from the exercise by both ground
and air forces.
(b) Exercise Roundabout. On the 2nd June, the squadron participated in
2nd T.A.F. Synthex Roundabout 6. 21 sorties were flown between dawn and dusk
and consisted of both pre planned target and route-recce allotted by 2 T.O.C.
(c) Exercise Fullhouse. The only 'Fullhouse' this month was on the 10th
June and 10 sorites were flown.
(d) Exercise Round-Robin. FLT.LT. RIMINGTON and PLT.OFF, HOLDEN-
RUSHWORTH flew to Zwellruchen and returned on the 23rd of the month.
(f) Demonstrations. FLT.LT. RIMINGTON flew to Husum on the 11th June to
demonstrate the Swift at an air display organised by the German Air Force.
2. ADMINISTRATION.
(a) Ground Training The emphasis once again this month was on the
analysis of cine film and air firing techniques.
(b) Dinghy Drill. Now that the station open air pool is open for the
summer, the squadron took the opportunity to carry out wet dinghy drill.
The whole squadron spent a pleasant Saturday morning on this form of
training during a brief spell of hot weather.
(c) Visits.
(i) Exercise Gate. A great deal of value was gained by the pilots
who travelled to Varrelbush to watch this exercise from the ground,
Amongst the equipment defending the site were M 42, L 70's with
Fledermaus radar and Skysweepers.
(ii) Ingelstadt. SQN.LDR. WADE and FLT.LT. SHARP and ADAIR flew
to Ingelstadt on the 30th of the month to consider the facilities
available for a possible squadron detachment in August.
(d) Sport.
(i) Cricket. The squadron contrived to win one of the 3
games played this month. Much difficulty has been experienced in
raising a team due to heavy
(ii) Skittle and Darts. The squadron pilots played 2 games in the
inter section knockout competition and now find themselves in
the finals of the 'skittles'. The squadron airmen's team are in
the semi finals of the 'skittles'.
(iii) A brief spell of hot weather at the beginning
of June saw most of the pilots in swimming kit at the station pool.
In the hope for more of the same, 3 of the pilots are building small
sailing dinghies.
(e) Entertainment. On the 28th June, 1960 FLT.LT. A.L. NEWING was dined
out by the squadron. On the 30th of June 1960 the squadron held a ladies
dining in night.
(f) Detachments. Flt.Lt. B.J. ST. AUBYN was detached for a week to R.A.F.
Brussen for an I.R.E. course.
