- Air Sea Rescue Launch "Fishing" Sylt May 1953. One of the roles of the ASR Launch was to clear away German Fishing Boats that ventured under the ranges when live firing was in progress. Norman and the boys were told by the ASR launch crew that they were going "fishing". This was strange as there was no fishing tackle on board. The launch pulled up alongside one of the German fishing boats and slung over a bucket with some bottles of gin and whisky. The bucket came back with some marvellous freshly caught fish. The launch crew said it was a hopeless job keeping the fishing boats off the range. The German fishermen would say that they had carried on fishing throughout the war when allied aircraft would occasionally deliberately fire at them so they saw no need to stop just to avoid a few cannon cases and spent rounds from the live ranges above. Roger Collins; Dougie Bridson; Norman Giffin; Bob Smith.

- Sabre F.4 from the Sabre Conversion Unit - Mar54. Ron Gray comments: They used the 'bi-plane' version. These slatted wings were flown by 93 Squadron and had minor variations in how one handled them. 4 Squadron flew the 'hard edge' in keeping with their reputation. (That should raise some hackles!)

- The old and new. Taken, Ron thinks, from within what was 4 Sqn. Hangar 1 in Vampire days, to which 4 Sqn returned with the Hunter. The Sabre is adorned with the Wing Commander's pennant. Then again it could have been Station Flight hanger when you consider the relationship of the south side buildings, Hangar 4. - Early 1954. [Web master: Ron is right if you compare the style of windows in the Hangar doors - Station Flight Hangar 2. Old 4 Sqn Hangar 1. The distance, 250mtrs/275yds, to the grass on which the Tiger Moth is parked is very deceptive.]

- Percival Prentice replaced the lovely DH82A and Eric Hughes with Dave Clayton, here flying the Tiger Moth, got the two of them together. I used to enjoy the Tiger Moth and take ground crew/admin staff up. One young lad (so was I) from Education I think was following through on the controls very well until we made an approach and at 500' he froze. I asked him to play 'Simple Simon Says' and put his hands in the air, which thankfully he did.
- DH-82A Tiger Moth Bi-plane flown by Dave Clayton and the Percival Prentice flown by Eric Hughes.
- This 1937 Opel was passed down at £25 a time to various 4 Squadron owners. It was the property of Ron Gray when pictured on one of the camp roads. It had an interesting journey back from RAF Rostrup Hospital when Bob Smith and Ron Gray went down on the 'off chance'. The 'off chance' was not fruitful and, during the return, all the running lights failed with exception of the spotlight. From the several visits to a local garage the owner accumulated many useful technical terms in German.
- 4 Sqn Sabre Mk.4 XB940 arrived on 4 Sqn on Wed 7Apr54 and crashed on 22Jun54. Fg Off Gray lost contact with formation in haze and attempted to return to Jever. Low fuel state (due to hostile homing signal) caused diversion to Hamburg, force-landed on an autobahn 8 miles east of Hamburg. Cat 4 starboard wing tip hit a tree.

- AOC's Parade. Parade Halt! After one of the march pasts. Ron Gray has a feeling that it is Pod Senar, 3rd from right in the Officers' ranks with, (Eric Pigdon thinks, Al Colvin on the end as he was on 93 by this time and had medal ribbons which most pilots on the station did not). This would make the left-hand squadron 93, and possibly the RAF Regiment at the rear. This was probably the last AOC's parade for the Station Commander Gp Capt Powel-Sheddon as he handed over the Station to Gp Capt Tom Prickett on 8Aug54. - 2Jul54.

- The Survival half of the course. Norman Giffin pays the price of opposing Des Browne and proving him wrong. Des drops a large snowball on Norman as he comes out of his igloo.
- Greetings from 4 Squadron 1954. Delivered from Sabre 4 air brake bays. Myself and Tony Pearce were detailed to Oldenburg, I think it was, and an Army unit at Osnabruck. We flew under a heavy cu and coming out the other side we found our windscreens obscured by ice we thought. Against recommendations we heated the screens, but to no avail. Guided each other to the targets and dumped the goods. On return to Jever we found it was SALT! Some years later one of the Brown Jobs (who were playing hockey at the time) became a British Railways Traffic Apprentice (a fast track to management). We met up at the office in the early 60's and swapping yarns; he was one of the hockey players.

- Two Officers' Mess Bills from Flying Officer Ron Gray. One item that was ALWAYS cleared at the end of a month, and NEVER carried forward was your Mess Bill. The lower two versions of the Mess Bills are converted to costs as they would be at March 2008 using the Retail Price Index.

- Snapshot in time - a page from Al Pollock's Logbook when he first joined 4 Sqn in about Aug57. The contrast has been increased so that the faint pencil written Christian names can be read. The large numbers, 23 pilots, was because the Duncan Sandys Defence Review had just disbanded 98 and 118 Sqns and pilots were kept on until they had owned their car overseas for one year. Otherwise they would have had to pay a large tax on repatriation to UK with less than one year's ownership. Those mentioned are as follows: Sqn Ldr R Chapman Flt. Lt. John Sutton; Fg. Offs. With 3 Hunter squadrons on detachment at the same time ( 14 Sqn. from Alhorn, a Belgium Air Force squadron and 4 Sqn.) he found Sylt to be rather crowded. In our time we were all brought up to eat an 'English' breakfast in the mornings. I recall that at first we all found it rather strange when our Belgium counterparts on the other side of the table would go for 'continental'. When however the jam was spread on top of the cheese we found this to be extremely odd indeed. Times have now changed though.
- 4 Squadron line, APC Sylt - Feb58. The nearest Hunter F.6 is X XG298 which arrived on 4 Sqn on Wed 13Mar57 and left on Mon 2Jan1 for Hawker Siddeley Aviation. The next Hunter down the line is Y XE590 which arrived on 4 Sqn on Thu 10Jul58 and left on Wed 9Nov60. Its 1st flt was flown by Hugh Mereweather 6Apr56 then passed to 19 Sqn as R, 263 Sqn, 93 Sqn and finally to 4 Sqn. The FR 4 Sqn as V crashed on 10Nov60, [Suspect this should be 61 as 4 did not become FR until 61 and there is no mention of this in the 4 Sqn F540 for Nov60.], following bird strikes, pilot safe. Cat 5 Damage write off.

- 4 Sqn Hunter Gun Pack Loading, Servicing and Rectification Crew. APC Sylt - Feb58. Personnel were drawn from the Armament Squadron at Jever to supported 4 Squadron during the 6 week detachment. Note the all important piece of personal equipment - the mug. Normally it was a matter of, no mug, then no tea when the NAAFI wagon came round. L to R: Mike Stanbrook, Unknown and Unknown. Anyone supply names?
- 4 Sqn Armourers at Sylt - Feb58.
- Maurice Parker preparing belts of 30 mm ammunition for loading into the Hunter Gun Packs - APC Sylt - Feb58. Before loading the gun packs, the tips of the projectiles would be dipped in non-hardening coloured paint so that later, when the flag is examined, hits can be allocated to each particular a/c Looking at this pic Maurice recalled an incident that was not really one the best thing to do. As we know, when on detachments some of us tend to do things that we would never dream of doing back at 'home'. At Sylt at that time the normal rivalry existed between the 3 visiting squadrons and somebody on 4 Sqn thought it a good idea to 'stand out in the crowd', so to speak and to show that 'we are Jever'. In those days bright yellow dusters were used to clean the Hunter canopies and these were found to be ideal to use as a scarf which could be worn inside the uniform jacket. Naturally this did not go un-noticed for long and after several 'clashes' with the station SPs and a word of authority from the 'top', this breach of dress regulations was short lived.
- The Hunter Aden 30mm Gun pack. The 4 barrels unscrewed and stayed in the aircraft, the holes can be seen on the lower front face, and the whole pack was winched down on to a trolley (blue above) and replaced by a fully loaded gun pack. Leading to a very quick re-arm - in fact faster than the Hunter could be refueled.

- Young Bill Simmons, son of Sergeant Bill Simmons of 4 Sqn Instrument Section, admires the Circus poster in downtown Jever. It says 3rd and 4th - assuming these were a Saturday and Sunday, (and there is no real reason why they should be!), then in the time Bill was at Jever the only such dates were in May, Jan and Oct. From his dress and the state of the trees it could be May 58?

- We believe this to be the flypast by 122 Wing on return from A.P.S. Sylt on Thursday 25th September 1958. The whole wing had been sent to Sylt while work was done on the Jever runway. 4 Sqn's F540 makes the following record: "Low cloud base and intermittent heavy rain did not deter the wing in returning to Jever this morning. The Wing was led by Wg. Cdr. G.C. Atherton and carried out a fly past at Sylt and Jever." We are fairly certain that it was a Sylt detachment as the aircraft have no tanks which was the norm for a Sylt detachment. I think it unlikely that they are all 4 Sqn Hunters as I can find no record of the Squadron getting 12 clean Hunters airborne all at one time. There was always planned to be at least one aircraft on Minor servicing out of a 12 Hunter establishment.
