A German friend of Bryan Mills obtained a document and the above photos from the German Air Force in 2004.   The approximate translation is: "Since March 1952 the airbase at Upjever once again provided background noise for the local citizens of the surrounding communities when, from time to time, shrill whistles and howls filled the air causing mixed feelings among the locals.   Usually there was nothing to see that could have caused the noise until the jet fighters were identified as the cause because of their high speed.   In Mar52 4 Sqn Royal Air Force equipped with Vampire FB.5s moved in to Upjever air base.   Only a month later there was the first incident: On Thu 17Apr52 Sgt. J. S. Jones, flying on a simulated rocket attack, in Vampire FB.5 WA141 ran out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing in the eastern outskirts of Oldenburg.   Sgt. Jones was not injured but later disciplined for the incident.   The aircraft was a total write off.   [Cat 5 components]"   Colin Cummings in his book "The Last Take-off" records only that "The aircraft was belly landed after its fuel ran out."   Click to see F540 report.   WA141 arrived on 4 Sqn on Tue 29Aug50.   (Thanks to Bryan Mills.)
