As well as the outdoor game we 'invented' indoor hockey and played it in a hangar on a pitch laid out as for ice hockey. It was fast and bloody lethal when a fast ball picked up and flew! I think it was six or seven a side. I played many times and after each game I was completely knackered. |

Sep54 CFS. |
| Notes: From Ernie Lack: "George is one of the very best, a fine officer and first class pilot. In those days we young bloods got up to much mischief. I taught him Canasta, then we two taught the rest, spending wild nights in desperate competition at Gliding School in Scharfoldendorff, whither Pete Williamson sent us to learn to glide ("a glider pilot is a better pilot"). He was not only a great athletics man, we played rugby together, on one occasion on the snow and ice covered pitch at Celle against the army. But his flying skills are even more exciting. While we were stationed at Jever he lost his (Vampire) engine high up if I remember rightly, over Hamburg. Perhaps it was the wicked barostat failure, which also occurred to me at 3.000ft shortly after take-off. I was lucky, my engine only lost power and I was able to turn around and land safely. George's was a flame out. He trimmed into a glide and sailed all the way back to Jever, used the correct procedures to lower his undercarriage manually and made an excellent engine off landing on the correct runway. Got a very well earned Green Entry in his logbook for that. But he could do much more! George rose to Wing Commander, did a tour in Canada, was once stationed in Norway where he was the NATO Liaison Officer, was in charge of Leuchars Flying Wing, got his DFC for sorting out horrible problems on the Javelin there, flew also the Lightning and conducted TACEVALs. After retiring from the RAF became Bursar at a high class school for boys near Caterham, from which he retired some years ago." From Ron Gray's Notes (21Mar06): "A press on type, and very smooth pilot. Left 4 Sqn while we had Sabres. Became a QFI and came to visit the squadron for a few days at the time we gained the Hunter4 and scrounged a conversion. I met with him at RAF MIDDLETON St. GEORGE, where he was instructing, while on leave. We flew a practice (at possibly WOMBLETON) in a Vampire T11 for his Battle of Britain display. It was quite exhilarating, to be allowed to do loops and rolls at such a low level. (Little did I think all those fifty odd years ago that I would return to this airfield to take my PPL at 72.) Wife Mary, lovely lady." |

| Notes: Svce No 2577790. I was an Electrical Fitter with B Flight and was there between September 1953 and November 1954. During this time, the changeover from Vampires to Sabres occurred. I remember going on detachments to Sylt (twice), Fasberg, Celle and Wunstorf, but other place names escape me just now. During my stay at the camp, I was station trumpeter and played bugle calls at colour hoisting parades and on Remembrance Day. Also, I was in the jazz band, which played in both Officers and Sergeants Mess. Sent 30Jul05

| Notes: Monika Zucht, daughter of Wilf Zucht, is trying to re-establish contact. She writes: "It was in the 50s when Benny (as we called him) Bent was a family friend, I was a school girl then and once spent my summer hollidays with the Bent family in Gorleston-on-sea, Grat Yarmouth where they lived." Bent joined the RAF on 8Nov37 and began a Wireless Operator Course in Feb38 and having completed the course was posted to Biggin Hill on 9Jan39. In Jun40 he volunteered for aircrew duties and after a short radar course, he joined 25 Squadron on 6Aug40 and began operational night-flying a few days later, as an LAC without a flying badge. On 27Sep40 he was promoted to Sergeant, with the category of Wireless Operator (Air). On his first operational tour he assisted in five successful interceptions. On the night of 4/5May41 he intercepted and damaged an unidentified enemy aircraft, on the 7/8th and 8/9th two Do 17s were destroyed, on the 11/12th a He 111 was damaged and during the night of 13/14Jun41 a Ju 88 was destroyed. He remustered as a Radio Observer on 10Jul41 and was posted to 54 OTU on 29Apr42 as an instructor. On 23Jul42 he was reclassified as a Navigator Radio and rejoined 25 Squadron on 8Sep42. On 21Mar44 he assisted in the destruction of two Ju 88s and at 00.43 hours on 6Jun44 a Bf 110 over the Dutch Islands, believed to be the first enemy aircraft shot down on D-Day. Awarded the DFC (26.5.44), he then served as a Night Fighter Liaison Officer in France with P61. |

| Notes: Svc No: 4123373. Les tells me: "My exposure to aircraft and flying at Jever started a lifetime enthusiasm for aviation, although I followed a career in electrical engineering on leaving the RAF. I also became a pilot, both of gliders and powered aircraft, I was for several years an instructor at Lasham gliding society. When in 1998 I was sent to the US to build a plant in Las Vegas, I continued flying there becoming a member of Las Vegas Valley Soaring Association, as well as flying light aircraft from McCarran and Skyharbor airports. This "temporary assignment has lasted until the present, now in retirement we live in Florida." |

| Notes: Bill Maish met Eric when he was recovering from a stroke in Mar07 and reports: "Eric was a navigator on Stirlings during the latter half of the war, and since I was introduced as a fellow RAF officer we have, over a couple of weeks got to chat a bit. He said as we parted last Thursday that his best tour was with a bunch of "fighter boys" at a place I would not recognise called Jever! He said that he had not realised that the fighter pilots had a completely different attitude to life and flying to the bomber crews (for whom survival was the main aim). Anyway, he was at Jever in 1954 but could not remember the dates, so I have asked him to bring his log book when we meet on Thursday next. He says he was Wing Nav, Safety and Rescue, Flight Safety and Wg Adj to Hammer West and his predecessor. Later he transferred to Fighter Control and gained the rank of Wing Commander before he retired. I am going to see more of him and hopefully dig up some more detail, and if he becomes more fit again, will try to persuade him to come to the reunion. He would be interested in anyone else who was there who remembers him." |

When he arrived we were on reduced trips on Sabre 4s because of lack of spares. He had tanks removed so that there were shorter trips but more of them. Campaigned to stop Sabre spares going to UK Sqns 66 and 92. Started 4 a/c Sqn aeros team which became 2TAF team, which was carried on through Hunter 4 and 6s. Ken Goodwin, 98 Sqn was solo display pilot, would join the team for a 5 a/c loop from take-off with a roll off the top in Hunter 6. Ken left the airfield and returned at the end of the 93 display riding a sonic boom. Des Browne received a bar to his AFC at that time. |

| Notes: David writes: "Best station in my 3 years as a tin basher. Groupie Smith treated all his men with respect and it filtered down through the officers and SNCO`s. I remember erecting crash barrier mainly when 2 sqn where flying. Building a set of steps when a load of headmasters came in a Comet and the first man out stood at the bottom for a photo and the rest piled up on the stairs - any way our welding held! At Christmas we all had a bar in the cellars under our blocks - the cooks won with a wild west theme. May '59 took holiday to Italy with Lofty & Geoff. Managed to get on Coppersmith Course without signing on for 9 years. 18/6/59 to 4/11/59 Coppersmith course at Weeton UK 85 of TT. Passed out as JT returned to Jever. 29/2/60 posted to command MOD Unit Laarbruch being the only unmarried. Coppersmith in Germany. So I did not have a long stay at Jever but is was the best of the 8 stations I was on. 15/7/60 Demobbed Innsworth." |

I had to drive to RAF Oldenburg to fill up the AVGAS tanker, there was no supply at Jever. I do not remember there ever being an Avro Anson there permanently. However I did refuel an Avro Anson at station flight...visiting VIPs. MPs from Westminster...if my memory is right. What i am really positive is... I was invited to sit in the pilots seat after I refueled the plane to look at the instrement gauges.. By the pilot,Group Captain Peter Townsend. Bye the way...sonic booms in the night being heard at Jever, i have the answer...Harry Elagh,s brother, both MT drivers, GSO men who lived in the camp at the end of the runway, as well as fine photographers, were amature drain pipe rocket makers and did their trial at the perry track a good distance away from their camp. Very true. Investigation into the holes appearing in camp fence, easy... Airmen had to be in camp by 2359 hours, not if you were in possesion of an old british penny...Leg up from one of your mates, wait till the GSO guard and his dog went by, unlace the wire at the top unlace all the way down, open sesame, walk straight through. Home to bed after the curfew. Happy memories." |

| Notes: Alan wrote: "Between December 1956 and August 1958 I was a Senior Aircraftsman of 101 Signals Unit i/c the Drawing Office at Brockzetel under W.C.'Tiger'Shaw and S.L. Pope having turned down an offer of a three-year flying commission Bomber/Transport commands (my upper legs were too long for the fighter aircraft of the day) in favour of my chosen career in teaching. At 101 SU one of my staff was a very gifted tall Dutch artist who painted many aircraft in flight. Could this by any chance be Bruno Alders? (Webmaster: I have asked Bruno and it was not him.) I retired as a high school headmaster in 1993 to pursue my passion for watercolour painting and have mounted several solo exhibitions and exhibited with the British Society of Painters. Your 'Steam Laundry' website has brought back many memories of the happy time I spent in Jever during National Service particularly your 2005 Reunion photographs. During my nineteen months: Padre Fullerton supported me for a moral leadership course in Cologne which was most enlightening; working alone, encouraged by the Education Officer, I successfully completed an 'A' Level Art Course taking my examination in Hohne; Karl Watson took me under his wing giving me some teaching practice in the BF Jever Primary School; I painted a pastiche of Landseer's Stag for one production at the Theatre; and I was a member of the R.A.F. Jever Rugby Football XV and during the 1957/958 Season we played thirty six games with only six of those at Jever (101 S.U.won the R.A.F. Jever Sevens Tournament). We travelled extensively and played against the Hamburg City Police and the Hanover 1878 Club. I was extremely saddened to read of John Lakeman's accident he was a true gentleman and a great character. Please excuse these nostalgic ramblings but I did think you might like to add the rugby photograph taken by S.A.C. R.E.Short (101 SU) to your website." Web Master's comment: No need to apologise! I wish everyone could tell a story of life as it was; the site would be richer for it! |

| Notes: Ted Childs was educated at St Bonaventure's School, London E7 and the University of Nottingham. After National Service, where he served as a flying officer with the RAF in Germany, he joined the London Press Exchange as a graduate trainee. He left advertising in 1960 to seek a career in television and trained as a programme director with ABC Television. He then went on to direct and produce a wide variety of factual programmes and documentaries including episodes of THIS WEEK, then the ITV current affairs flagship, and the much acclaimed WORLD AT WAR series. He was one of the founding fathers of Euston Films, the film production company established by Thames Television in the early seventies and was there responsible for THE SWEENEY, SPECIAL BRANCH and QUATERMASS series together with a number of theatrical and television films. In 1979, he joined Trident Television (then owners of Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television) as executive director of its film production company, Claridge Films, where his primary function was to co-produce with overseas partners. Films for which he was responsible here included an adaptation of OLIVER TWIST starring George C Scott as Fagin. In 1984 he was appointed Controller of Drama at Central Television and, subsequently, Managing Director of Central Films. In this dual role, he acted as executive producer on an extensive range of films and series for ITV including INSPECTOR MORSE, SOLDIER SOLDIER, PEAK PRACTICE, SHARPE, CADFAEL, CHANCER, GONE TO THE DOGS, KAVANAGH QC, THIEFTAKERS and HEAT OF THE SUN. Following the acquisition of Central Television by Carlton Communications, Ted opted to seek a freelance role primarily as a writer, although he is still retained by Carlton UK Television as a drama consultant. During 1998 he is scheduled to be responsible for a variety of films and television drama including an adaptation of Michelle Magorian's popular children's novel, GOODNIGHT MR TOM, a mini-series adapted from Gerald Seymour's espionage thriller, THE WAITING TIME and the final MORSE film based upon Colin Dexter's novel, THE WENCH IS DEAD. In 1997, Ted was appointed a director of Yorkshire Group Programmes, the production arm of Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television and also joined the board of its film company, Griffin Films Limited. In 1991, The Guild of Film Production Executives honoured Ted with its annual Award of Merit. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Television Society (RTS) in 1992. In the same year he was also appointed an honorary lecturer in the school of Finance & Management Studies at the University of Nottingham. He was Chairman of the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) during 1994-95. In 1995 he received the RTS Cyril Bennett Judges' Award for outstanding creative contribution to British Regional Television. In the 1997 New Year Honours List, Ted received an OBE for services to Broadcast Television. Also in 1997 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Moving Image Society (formerly the British Cinematograph and Television Society). Ted now commutes between homes in London and the Mid-West of Ireland. In addition to his consultancy roles, he continues to remain active in the development of new television drama and film. |

| Notes: Svc No: 5038432. Day job was down the hole at Brockzetel, much of the other time was playing or listening to music of some sort. British Forces Network recorded a show at the Astra which suffered our Downtowners skiffle group featuring my good friend Rex Cole on guitar, me on teachest bass and Frank Titterton ukulele. Rex and I moved onto Jazz and I inherited the double bass role in the Jade Basin 5 +1 which is featured elsewhere by Maurice Gavan. Played in a trio with pianist Jock ? and drummer Johnnie Ball for free drink and a little silver, usually in Sgts mess. Johnnie went on to appear in and script TV shows and father Zoe who still features on TV. Met Johnnie who attended Liverpool v Ipswich football game in late 70s and entertained watching hordes of fans by dancing a jig in the street which surprised many as I was dressed in my full regalia and braid as the senior Police officer i/c the Football match. Kept closely in touch with Rex Cole attending Jazz festivals and drinking and recently celebrating our joint 70th birthdays. Now fully retired, involved in local history research and trying not to die too young. |

| Notes: Eric Pigdon Notes 23Nov04. Leo was also engineering officer responsible for 93 sqn when we were moving from sqn ground crew flight with Flt Sgt in charge of sqn servicing teams. Leo was liaison officer to ASF with Bill Sykes. Ken Senar told me 8Apr05 that Leo was very keen on sports and was an amateur boxing referee. He was instrumental in Jever being picked for the 2TAF sports venue. (Date forgotten). Eddie McCullagh identified (18Aug04) Leo in 98sqnpic104. Ken Senar told me 8Apr05 that Ron Gray's escapade landing on the Autobahn featured strongly in the German press at the time. He had a collection of German articles and cartoons about his landing on the Autobahn. It was planned to refuel his Sabre and fly it off, taking off under a bridge to gather speed. Unfortunately there was a dent in the leading edge of the starboard wing which made things potentially dodgy. He had hit a sapling when taxying to one side of the carriageway after landing. I think Leo Cowan was present and in charge of the aircraft being dismantled. I'm pretty sure I'm right on this. |

I have lots of memories in my head!. Pete Jarvis lived near me in Shortens. I have loads of info regarding the Dutch Hunters, and witnessed the crash of one of them, plus the amazing Gleen one lifting the u/c to soon. I witnessed that too and helped Groupie Smith to clean up the debris off the runway. Plucked many errant aircraft out of my airfield arrester barriers. One a 2 sqn Swift at full bore, on a cold afternoon. Groupy Smith brought hot tea and soup out for us while doing repairs. |
