Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                    RESTRICTED. Page 8

Points en Basic Defence.

1. Move No. 2 well forward nearly line abreast.

2. No. 2 goes wide when being attacked - Problem.

3. Attacked a/c turns away from the other.

4. A/c not attacked watches attacker and turns so as to menace the
attacker.

5. If attack not pressed a/c reverse and head for home if necessary.

6. If attack is pressed the free a/c gives max. mutual support -
important use of the Radio - no question of handing over lead.

7. The use of the last ditch manoeuvre may be necessary.

The Break.

1. The break is an emergency call and a confession of failure.

2. May be called by any member of the formation.

3. It should be called only when enemy a/c are discovered in range
and about to fire. 8OOx.

4. No. 2 in the fighting position may be able to follow his No. 1 but
will often be caught out of position and will have to go. No. 2 loses
No. 1 for first 90° can then pick up No. 1 again.

5. This covers an emergency if the enemy are picked up earlier the
hard turn is sufficient.

6. React immediately on the call.

Reversing.

1. Reversing a turn during a break is very risky business but if used
properly is the quickest way of converting defence to offence.

     Principle.

NEVER REVERSE IF A/C BEHIND IS AT YOUR AIRSPEED.

     Remember.

LATERAL SEPARATION MUST BE OBTAINED BEFORE USING
         THE REVERSAL.

Your best chance of getting lateral separation will usually come when
the attacker is faster than you and/or coming in with a high angle off. Watch
him - keep turning into him and when he slides past - Reverse - from then, as
he slides out in front he is on the defensive and you are on the offensive.

MORE THAN ONE TURN REVERSAL IS A SCISSORS.

                                                      /THE SCISSORS.

                                  RESTRICTED
