Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                    RESTRICTED. Page 7

11. There are three distinct phases in destroying an a/c.

         (a) Manoeuvring

         (b) Tracking

         (c) Firing and adjusting the pipper.

Most of the failures are the result of trying to track, and fire
before the manoeuvring has been solved.

12. When in doubt ATTACK.

13. Split a four at altitude, and it generally stays/split.

14. Use of the radio - very important.
                   No. 2's calling Thro'.

15. The No. 2 and 4 are the defensive eyes of the formation. The leader
and No. 3 are the offensive eyes. Allocate areas of responsibility, and
insist on correct searching.

16. Always react to area of greatest threat.

                             TACTICS - DEFENSIVE.

The are no O.K. phrases with regard to air fighting which will always
apply. The line between offence and defence is a very thin one - you can't
control a situation - you fit into it and take it from there. Luck must play
some part in the business and regardless of your ability there will always be
somebody better.

Thoughts on Defensive Tactics.

1. In combat there are times when we want manoeuvrability and flexibility
and times when mutual support is of the primary concern.

2. We must therefore teach our pilots to recognise and handle themselves
correctly in each situation.

3. It is logical when maximum manoeuvrability is wanted that the No. 2
should be well back and not too wide - By the same token it is logical that
when max. mutual support is required the No. 2 should get himself well forward
and wide enough so the attacker should have to select either but not able to
switch his attack when in firing range.

4. A basic defence is set up which may be arrived at under varying
circumstances.

     (a) Failure in offence.

     (b) Defence thrust upon you - Fuel - Damage - No ammo.
           i.e. no offensive capability left.

                                                         /Points

                                  RESTRICTED
