Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                    RESTRICTED. Page 9

THE SCISSORS.

1. You must become familiar with this manoeuvre.

2. Two aggressive pilots or pairs wi11 eventually end up in a scissors -
that is	a series of manoeuvring turns for advantage.

3. These turns will kill airspeed and a thorough and sound knowledge
of your a/c characteristics at low airspeed is vital.

4. This scissors is one of the quickest ways of turning defence to
offence.

                             ____________

1. As you are attacked you turn into your attacker until he can no
longer stay in your radius turn.

2. You see him drift thro' the 6 o'clock position.

3. The more rapidly he closes - the higher his A/O and the closer he
passes you line astern - the earlier you can carry out a reversal.

4. You know he has more airspeed or he wouldn't be there.

5. If he has slow rate of closure throttle - A/B and flap may be
required.

7. After your reverse you wi11 see him still turning towards you
canopy to canopy.

8. From this point the two pairs will conduct a series of reversals -
each pilot trying to got rid of his airspeed by pulling up, using A/B -
Flap.

9. The pilot who achieves the most rapid deceleration and reducing his
forward vector will win.

10. The attacker if he is fool enough after two or three reversals will
end up sliding in front.

The Trick Is:

1. If you are being attacked to recognise the instant to reverse.

2. If you are the attacker, a good pilot is going to have you in
trouble unless you pull up to the 6 o'clock position and trade
airspeed for altitude.

3. When attacking don't have too much overtake speed.

4. This is a dangerous manoeuvre for the attacker if he has no
cover - There may be more enemy in the area.

5. Breaking out of the scissors?

No. 2.

1. Must stay with you.

2. We have drawn some wrong conclusions in the past.

3. Give him maximum help with your change of throttle A/B flap.
