PART 1-DESCRIPTIVE
(b) Emergency operation
If hydraulic pressure falls, the airbrakes may be operated
by the handpump, after making the normal selection.
24. Wheelbrakes
The pneumatically-operated wheelbrakes are controlled by
a lever on each control column. Differential braking is
obtained by operating the rudder pedals with either of the
levers pressed. The pressure at each wheel (120 lb./sq.in.
max) may be read on the triple pressure gauge (8) on the
port wall of the front cockpit. A parking catch is incor-
porated on the front control column and, pre-Mod. 813, on
the control column in the rear cockpit.
25. Flight instruments
(a) A.S.I. and associated instruments
(i) A combined pitot-static pressure head on the port
wing supplies pressure for the operation of the
A.S.I.s, V.S.I.s and altimeters.
(ii) The pressure head can be electrically heated, the sup-
ply being controlled by a switch (61) on the starboard
switch panel in the front cockpit.
(b) Compass and direction indicators
(i) Remote indicating compasses
Pre-Mod. 1177, there is a remotely-indicating compass
in the front cockpit, the electrical supply being con-
trolled by a switch on the starboard switch panel in
the front cockpit.
(ii) Mk. 4F compass
Mod. 1177 introduces a MK. 4F compass (39) in the
front cockpit, together with an A.C. voltmeter (53)
below the main instrument panel and a corrector
control box (126) in the rear cockpit. The electrical
supply is controlled by a master switch (59) and D.C.
(65) and A.C. (64) NORMAL-EMERGENCY
switches (see para. 16(c)). When I.L.S. is installed, the
Mk. 4F compass is replaced by a Mk. 4FT. 21
