101. The flagpole in May 1958. There is an amusing story concerning this flagpole. All junior officers in those days
had to do a spell as Orderly Officer. One of the chores was to lower the flag at exactly 1800 hrs each day on this
flagpole outside Station Headquarters. Rumour has it from Chris Stone that John Haig of 93 Squadron fame was on
duty one week and arrived at 1805 hrs to find Group Captain "Black" Smith, the Station Commander, halfway through
lowering the flag. The Station Commander's office was, and still is, in the office with the verandah directly over the
entrance to the HQ. Needless to say, "Black", who was a stickler for procedure, noticed the absence of the Orderly
Officer and came down and lowered the flag himself to make a point. Apparently there was a short sharp one-sided
conversation between John and the Station Commander (when he had finished lowering the flag) and John collected
another week as Orderly Officer! (Thanks Mick Ryan).
