Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                    RESTRICTED. Page 3

(a) Patrol Position.

Gives maximum look with obvious sacrifice of flexibility (Eternal
compromise).

(b) Fighting Position.

      1. Adopted when the pair is requiring maximum flexibility.
No. 2 must stick, and so look out suffers so that when the
manoeuvre is complete No. 2 is still there to continue his job.
             2.  It is a well swept position 55°   200x.
      3. Not actually a position, but an area - cutting off - crossing -
      sliding - anything to STAY.

      4. It must be close to the leader so that the attacker out
performs No. 1 to get No. 2.

      5. Initially the fighting position is very off putting - No. 2
feels that there is not time to look around. Rather like learning
to drive a motor car. No. 2's must be taught to STICK first, and
his other duties follow in natural sequence.

A Few Tips on Sticking.

1. Consider your A/C attitude compared with your leaders.

2. Stay on inside of turn until you can't hold it - then slide to line
astern position - but do not go to the line astern position - you find
yourself there because you have no option.

3. If the leader is dealing with a really "Aggressive chap with snow on
his boots" all you can do as No. 2 is to hang on.

4. Immediately the G comes off get to the inside - lateral separation -
and start searching.

5. If No. 2 loses his leader he must say so immediately.

Altitude Problem.

1. High altitude not yet mentioned.

2. Reduction of available thrust and increase in the turning radius.

3. Don't spread out with altitude - takes longer to reach the fighting
position - increases your troubles.

Tips for No. 2.

1. Use same distance.

2. Concentrate on keeping airspeed as opposed to staying on inside of turn.

3. When turning into ease across from inside to outside - change gradually.

4. Gentle stick movements - or you will lose valuable airspeed.

5. Be more careful of keeping approx. position - more difficult to regain
at altitude.
