                               AIR FIGHTING TACTICS.

Introduction.

There is still much to be said about tactics, and the operation of high,
fast flying, jet aircraft in air combat.

The weapon and the weapon platform decide tactics. They are ever changing
and new techniques must continuously be evolved.

Air fighting as a team, creates interest and enthusiasm, inspires confidence,
and helps to produce an aggressive and well trained pilot.

                              TACTICS - OFFENSIVE.

Why we Fly a Tactical Formation.

1. To obtain maximum manoeuvrability for offensive Air/Air operations.

2. To achieve maximum mutual support and cross cover for defensive Air/Air
operations.

It is always a compromise between maximum maneuverability and maximum
cross cover.

Offensive Problems.

     Tactically.

We must start somewhere to give an inexperienced fighter pilot
instruction.

First Basic Problem.

Position of No. 2 in offensive air work. When operating as a four
the No. twos can be kept in the fighting position, as long as mutual support
exists between the pairs. This gives the four maximum flexibility, and as
much search as is required.

Position of No. 2 in a Pair.

The No. 2 needs to be taught the two positions in which he might fly, and
the necessity for him to assess correctly in which position he should be flying at
a particular moment.

     1. Two Phases.

           (a) Patrol Position

           (b) Fighting Position.
