		         PART IV - EMERGENCY HANDLING

fail, trimming can be carried out through use of the
alternate trim switches on the port console.

      81. Air brakes emergency operation

      (i) A hydraulic accumulator provides sufficient pressure for
one opening and closing of the air brakes by use of the
normal switch in the event of failure of the utility
           hydraulic system.
      (i) If the accumulator is exhausted or if there is an electrical
failure the air brakes may be closed by putting the
emergency air brake control to EMERG. CLOSED.

      82. Undercarriage emergency operation

      (i) Emergency lowering release
Reduce airspeed to below 175 knots; at higher speeds
air loads may hold the doors closed then:-
           (a) Select DOWN on normal selector.
           (b) Pull the emergency release and hold it fully extended
to ensure the release of all up-locks.
           (c) Yaw the aircraft, if necessary, to lock the main
wheels. Check all down on the indicator.
(ii) Emergency retraction on the ground
Select UP on the normal selector and press the button
marked EMERG. UP. Hold the button in until the
wheels retract, this will occur only if there is sufficient
pressure in the utility hydraulic system.
(iii)Failure of nosewheel to lock down
           (a) If the nosewheel is down but not locked, an attempt
may be made to lock it by carrying out a normal
approach, bouncing the aircraft on its main wheels,
                and then going round again.
           (b) If this is unsuccessful jettison all external loads and
if possible expend all ammunition and as much fuel
as practicable to obtain an aft C.G.
           (c) Land the aircraft using the following procedure:-
Open the hood, release the parachute harness and
                lock the shoulder harness back.
Make a normal approach aiming to use as much of
                the runway as possible.
before touching down, close the throttle to OFF to
stop the engine and switch OFF the engine master,
generator and battery-starter switches, in that order,
to allow time for the L.P. cock to close.
After touching down, use the maximum amount of
aerodynamic braking but lower the nose slowly
onto the ground before tailplane control is lost.
