		         PART IV - EMERGENCY HANDLING

            to idling r.p.m. keeping the j.p.t. below 500°C.  If the
            j.p.t. remains below 200°C. when the throttle is opened
            it indicates incomplete combustion and the engine must
            be shut down at once.
      (vii) The relighting switch must never be left on for more
            than 3 minutes at a time, with an interval of 30 seconds
            for cooling between each 3 minute period.
      (viii)If an attempt to relight must be made above 15,000
            feet the j.p.t. is critical and must be carefully watched.
            Slow and careful throttle movement is essential as small
            changes in fuel pressure greatly affect combustion.  At
            very high altitudes, if the relight is successful, the com-
            pressor may stall when the engine is opened up.  If so the
            throttle must be set OFF and a restart attempted using
            a smaller initial throttle setting.

       76.  Action in the event of a fire

       (i)  If the forward fire warning light comes on stop the
            engine immediately and switch off the generator.
       (ii) If the aft fire warning light comes on reduce power and
            check whether the light goes out.  If it does so continue the
            flight at reduced power.  If the light remains on stop
            the engine immediately and switch off the generator.
       (iii)If, after stopping the engine, the indication of a fire
            persists, switch off the battery and either carry out a
            forced landing or abandon the aircraft.

       77.  Abandoning the aircraft

       (i)  The ejection seat should always be used to abandon the
            aircraft, if possible.  If not possible the air brakes must
            be in.
       (ii) The procedure is as follows:-
            (a)  Decrease speed as much as possible.
            (b)  At altitude, operate emergency oxygen bottle, if
                 applicable.
            (c)  Lean well forward and lower the head, then pull
                 up the starboard handgrip to jettison the canopy,
                 taking care not to squeeze the seat ejection trigger.
            (d)  Pull up the port handgrip to lock the shoulder
                 harness.
            (e)  Sit erect with the head hard back against the head-
                 rest, the chin tucked in and lock the heels back in
                 the footrests.  Brace the arms on the armrests.
            (f)  Squeeze the ejection seat trigger.
            (g)  After ejection, release the safety harness and push
                 the seat away.
