PART III - HANDLING
Although the minimum turning radius occurs at a rela-
tively low mach number, it is better to not to allow the
speed to drop below that for the maximum rate of climb
for the particular altitude as, particularly at high altitude,
height would have to be lost in order to accelerate quickly
to the best climbing speed. The table below sets out the
approximate mach numbers above which a large increase
in the turning radius occurs.

PART III - HANDLING
65. Spinning
(i) It is recommended that practice spins should be carried
out on clean aircraft only and that a height of 20,000-
25,000 feet be reached before commencing the spins.
(ii) The spin is initiated in the normal manner and may vary
between aircraft. The behaviour may also vary between
spins to the left and spins to the right. In all cases the
rate of rotation is slow, about four seconds per turn. In
some cases the spin may not develop fully, even with full
pro-spin control. In a fully developed spin the nose rises
and falls slowly during each turn in which time about
2,000 feet of height is lost. Some buffeting may be
experienced initially but this becomes less as the spin
develops.
(iii)Before recovery check that the air brakes are IN and that
the engine is idling. Recover by applying full opposite
rudder and moving the control column forward until the
spin stops. Keep the ailerons central as the recovery may
be seriously affected if aileron is used. Centralise the
controls as soon as the spin has stopped and, after gain-
ing speed, ease the aircraft gently out of the dive.
(iv) With a clean aircraft, recovery is effected within one
turn, after taking the necessary corrective action.
(v) The aircraft will recover from spins when full, or partially
