		           PART III - HANDLING

of white smoke will be emitted. Should this
occur, move the throttle to fully OFF, keep-
ing the starter engaged for about 30
seconds to clear the excess fuel. Failure to
close the throttle to OFF will usually result
                  in a hot start.
(iii)The start must be abandoned by pressing the button
marked PUSH TO STOP STARTER should either of
the conditions given below arise. Failure to do so will
inverter to cut in and the fuel flow amplifier to warm
result in excessive temperatures when the light-up
eventually takes place because of accumulation of fuel
in the combustion chambers and jet pipe:-
            (a) If no light-up has been obtained by the time the
r.p.m. have reached 10 per cent.
            (b) If the rate of acceleration between 6 per cent. and
10 per cent. is unduly slow coupled with a failure
to ignite. Should this fault be encountered the cause
must be rectified before a further start is attempted.
An r.p.m. of 10 per cent. and a light-up should be
obtained within 10 seconds of opening the throttle.
(iv) Before attempting a second start, wait for three minutes
to allow the accumulated fuel to drain and the starter to
cool. The starter is limited to three successive starts of
one minute duration per start. If more than three starts
are required allow the starter to cool for 30 minutes
before a further attempt is made.
       (v) The starter will cut out automatically. The PUSH TO
STOP STARTER button must never be used for this
purpose during a normal start, otherwise damage may
occur and the rate of acceleration may be reduced.

(vi) (a) A start or acceleration during which the j.p.t.
exceeds 1,000°C. momentarily, or any ten starts or
accelerations during which the j.p.t. exceeds 870°C.
momentarily entails the engine removal and overhaul.
            (b) When a hot start takes place, stop the engine imme-
diately by closing the throttle to the OFF position.
If smoking or a fire occurs and persists, engage the
starter for 20-30 seconds, keeping the throttle OFF,
to blow out the excess fuel.
            (c) Five starts or accelerations during which 870°C. is
exceeded momentarily requires that the engine be
examined for possible damage prior to flight.
            (d) The duration of the excessive temperature and the
temperature obtained must be entered in the F.700
                 for the aircraft.
