PART III - HANDLING
familiar with starting procedure all starts should
be supervised.
(i) Check that the ground starter is giving full power, then
wait at least 30 seconds after the single phase inverter
warning light (MAIN RADAR) goes out to allow the
inverter to cut in and the fuel flow amplifier to warm
up. Without this warming-up period, the fuel flowmeter
may not indicate, in which case it cannot be used to regu-
late the fuel flow during starting.
(ii) Start the engine as follows:-
(a) Recheck that the throttle is fully back (OFF).
(b) Switch ON the engine master switch and leave it on
for the remainder of the flight.
(c) Hold the battery starter switch momentarily at
STARTER, then move to BATTERY, and leave it
in this position for the remainder of the flight.
(d) At 3 per cent. r.p.m. move the throttle outboard to
energize the booster pumps and igniter plugs.
(e) At 6 per cent. r.p.m. advance the throttle firmly,
using both hands for accurate control, to obtain a
fuel flow of 500-700 lb./hr. Maintain this flow until
the light-up takes place.
(f) After the light-up the j.p.t. rises rapidly and must be
allowed to stabilize before the throttle is opened
further If the j.p.t. rise is rapid and likely to
exceed the limit, throttle back slightly.
(g) Once the j.p.t. has stabilized, open the throttle as
rapidly as possible to the idling position but keep the
j.p.t. between 600°C and 690°C. Higher tempera-
tures may be reached but these are not harmful if
of brief duration and are less than 870°C.
(h) Idling r.p.m. vary between 34 per cent. and 38 per
cent.
(j) If there is no reading on the oil pressure gauge
within 30 seconds stop the engine.
NOTE.-(a) If the engine does not begin to turn as soon
as the starter is engaged, that is, there is no
audible indication and the r.p.m. gauge fails
to register within a few seconds, the PUSH
TO STOP STARTER button must be
pressed at once or the starter will be
damaged.
(b) If in an attempt to prevent the j.p.t. rising
excessively, the throttle is moved back too
far, the flame will go out and dense clouds
