PART 1V-EMERGENCY HANDLING
83. Action in the event of engine fire
If an engine fire warning light comes on, close the throttle
immediately, then set:-
H.P. cock OFF
L.P. cock Off
L.P. pump Off
Reduce speed to a practical minimum. The press the
extinguisher button. Should the fire persist, abandon the
aircraft. The engine must not be restarted., owing to the risk
of a further fire.
84. Emergency operation of undercarriage, flaps and airbrakes
(a) Hydraulic failure
If the starboard engine or the hydraulic pump fails and the
hydraulic circuit has not been used since failure, the
hydraulic accumulator should have sufficient residual pres-
sure to lower both the undercarriage and flaps when these
services are selected. If there is insufficient pressure, due
to the prior use of the airbrakes, any of the hydraulic
services may be operated by using the handpump. Little
resistance is felt when the handpump is used, until the
selected service is fully extended. The nosewheel will not
lower fully at speeds of 160 knots and above.
(b) Undercarriage selector lever jamming
If the undercarriage selector lever jams, it may be due to
hydraulic back pressure sticking the rotary valve. Relief is
provided by exhausting the hydraulic system. The star-
board engine should be throttled back, speed reduced and
the airbrakes or flaps operated until the selector is free. If
this proves ineffective, flame out the starboard engine and
operate the sirbrakes.
(c) Ground-locking with undercarriage up
If, after selecting DOWN, the port undercarriage is slow
to lower, the ground-lock may come into action on the
compressed oleo leg and the selector lever will be locked
down with the port leg locked up. It will be necessary to
operate the ground-lock override before the lever can be
freed. The lever should be selected DOWN in the
usual way. 60
