During a practice for an impending visit by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh the engine failed when in the circuit at Jever. The pilot, Fg. Off. Ray Hancock, misjudged his approach to a forced landing on the airfield and passed the runway caravan, going the wrong way, at about 200 knots. F/O A J A Sagar a new arrival on the squadron, while operating from Butzweilerhof, ran out of fuel and was obliged to bale out near Maaseik, Netherlands. He came down safely by parachute and his aircraft crashed near a pumping station. The rest of the formation landed rather low on fuel due to the bad weather and lack of radio contact. Sagar's particular shortage was due to having left his flaps down. |

Caught fire in the air and crashed at Odiham. F/L B R A Cox. There is some doubt as to the ownership of the aircraft at the time. The aircraft had earlier suffered a heavy landing accident on Sun 27Jul52 whilst flown by P/O Elsden and been repaired at Marshalls. Although there is no record of the aircraft being transferred to another unit, a note states "20 Squadron aircraft/54 Squadron pilot". Flt Lt Cox was definitely a member of 54 Squadron and is mentioned as part of the squadron Hunter team a few years later. Perhaps he was air-testing the Vampire for the unit? |

Failed to recover from an unauthorised attack on a civilian Dominie and crashed 2m SW of Haywards Heath, killing P/O C R Donaldson. Robin Brown's book "Shark Squadron" tells a slightly different tale:" The Squadron's first fatal accident occurred during a detachment to RAF Odiham on 27Jul52 when P/O C R Donaldson flying No 2 to F/O Keith Williamson was involved in a dog-fight with the Odiham Meteors. He appears to have lost control and dived away vertically, startling a passing Anson pilot who though he was being bounced, but the Vampire never pulled out." |
