				PART I-DESCRIPTIVE

be not more than 21° either side of centre to allow the
                 unit to engage.
NOTE.-A towing release pin is fitted above the nose-
wheel and must be disengaged by inserting a
wedge for towing the aircraft. The pin should be
checked before flight to make sure it is engaged
and the safety cap is on.

	    23. Wing flaps (if fitted) A.L.1.

The control lever (50) for the electrically-operated flaps
is mounted in a quadrant beside the throttle lever and
has three positions UP, HOLD (neutral) and DOWN.
The flap range is 0 to 38°. There is no flap position
indicator but the flap position can be estimated by
reference to the painted stripes on the leading edge of
                 the flap.

	    24. Wing slats

The full-span slats operate automatically, opening at
about 180 knots. Up to approximately .65M an increase
in G may open the slats. At higher Mach number they
will not open at any value of G.

	    25. Air brakes

	    (i) The air brakes, located on each side of the fuselage, are
	         hydraulically-operated and electrically-controlled by a
switch (46) on top of the throttle lever marked SPEED
BRAKES. The switch has three positions IN, OUT and
a neutral position indicated by a white mark on the
switch guide. After any air brake operation the switch
should be returned to neutral to minimize the fire hazard
should a line be damaged, as the hydraulic lines are near
the engine. No position indicator for the air brakes is
	         fitted.
(ii) A hydraulic accumulator is provided to supply enough
pressure for one complete two-way operation of the air
brakes in the event of hydraulic system failure.
(iii)An emergency air brake control (49) is mounted just
outboard of the throttle lever, and is normally wired
in the aft NORMAL position, a dump valve opens,
relieving the hydraulic pressure. Air loads will then close
the brakes. No emergency means of re-opening the
	         brakes is provided.
