                            PART II-HANDLING

    (v) Switch on the ignition and press the starter pushbutton.
Turning periods should not exceed 20 seconds with a 30
seconds wait between each attempt. In very cold
weather it may be necessary to prime gently until the
engine picks up. Screw down the priming pump after
          use.

(vi) Allow the engine to tick over until the oil pressure builds
up to 45 lbs./sq. in., then warm up at between 1,000 and
          1,200 r.p.m.

(vii) If a ground starter battery has been used have it dis-
connected and set the ground/flight switch to FLIGHT.

    33. Testing the engine and services

To accelerate warming up, the oil cooler shutter may be
          closed (see para. 5).

          While warming up:-
    (i) Checl all temperatures and pressures. Ensure that pneu-
matic pressure is more than 230 lb./sq. in. and then test
the operation of the flaps by lowering and raising them.

After warming up to 30°C. oil temperature:-
(ii) Open the throttle to 2,000 r.p.m. and exercise the con-
stant-speed propeller by moving the r.p.m. control lever
slowly over the full governing range at least twice and
return the lever fully forward. Check that the generator
          warning light is out.

(iii) At the same power check each magneto in turn. The
single ignition drop should not exceed 50 r.p.m. If the
drop exceeds this figure, but is not accompanied by ex-
cessive vibration or rough running it may be possible to
clear the engine by carrying out the drill in sub. para.
          (iv) and (v) below.

NOTE:-The following full power check may be carried
out after repair, inspection other than daily, if
required by sub. para. (iii) above, or at the discre-
tion of the pilot. Normally, if the check in (iii)
has been satisfactory, no useful purpose will be
served by a full power check.

(iv) With the r.p.m. control lever fully forward, open the
throttle to the take-off position and check boost and
          r.p.m.
