Tempest Target Towing versions at APC Sylt - July 1951.   This picture prompted the following information from Ron Gray: "The subject pic struck me as the beginning of the end for the Tempest TT as in the background I believe is a Mossie.   The Mossie took over as an interim to the replacement Meteor 8 which allowed higher altitude levels of towing.   During my time with 4 Sqn we had Tempests and Mosquitos, but am unsure if the Meatbox came before the 1955 attachment.   The advantage of the Mosquito was its ability to carry four flags, and after each 4th sortie by the Sqn aircraft it simply dropped the shot up flag and returned to the range for the next bunch of firing aircraft."   David Watkins has added some more information on the subject of traget towing aircraft at Sylt.   The last Tempests were ferried away in October 1954, whereas the Mosquitoes were at Sylt from March 1953 - April 1958.   As this picture was definitely taken in Jul1951 the Mosquito must have been from a visiting squadron at that time.    (Thanks to David Watkins and John Price and Ron Gray.)
