OC Flying Wg Cdr Hammer West standing by his service Volkswagon on the Dining Room Tables in the Officer' Mess after a Dining-In Night.   I have heard of this being done many times but never had a photograph of the result - about 1955.   Jimmy Butler tells his side to this story: "I was duty driver in the MT section on the night the Wing Coimmander Flying's Volkswagon beetle went astray.   All staff vehicles have to brought into the MT section at night to be checked for oil, refulled and speedometer reading, then returned to their drivers.   GSO driver comes to me and reports "...Jock, cannot find Wing Commander Flying's car!"   I phoned the guard room and was told that as there was no disc for the vehicle there, the car must be somewhere in camp.   I sent a posse out to search for the car.   After about an hour still no sign of the car. I phoned the Wing Commander Flying's house.   His wife said he was in the officers' mess.   I went to the officers' mess, and yes, there was the Volkswagon on the table.   I explained to the officer I met at the reception in the mess, that I needed to get the speedo reading of the car so as I could book it in and out again.   He asked me if my shoes were clean!   He said I could not go up onto the table with dirty shoes, but if I removed my shoes it would be OK!   You could not make this up!!   I removed my shoes and got on to the table, opened the car door and took the speedo reading.   When Ive told this story to people they think I'm pulling their leg.   Now I can repeat the story, I've got the pictures to prove it!"   [Click to see description.]
