Death of Flying Officer Charlie Powell in Vampire FB.9 WA121 (Not WD121 as in the report), whilst flying a weather check from RAF Chivenor on 21Nov56.

     After serving on No 118 Squadron at RAF Jever, Charlie Powell was posted to the staff at No 229 OCU at RAF Chivenor to train new students on the Hunter.   One morning he was authorised to fly the Vampire for a weather check and he never returned.   His younger sister, Katherine Dover, wrote to the Air Historical Branch which, at the time was located at RAF Bentley Priory, (now at RAF Northolt), and received the following explanatory letter once she had established her credentials as a next-of-kin:
