Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                  RESTRICTED. Page 38

Approach Problems.

10. During the flight to the target the following actions must be
considered:-

     (a) Selection of the weapons, particularly rockets.

     (b) Sight settings.

     (c) Master switches.

     (d) Radar Ranging. The radar presentation switch is fitted so that
the radar ranging can be on and the sight isolated from it for ground
     attack purposes.

Attack Formations.

11. Various target dispositions require various attack formations and
the problems must be considered in such a way that maximum striking power can
be achieved in the shortest time consistent with aircraft safety. Consider how
the formation is to attack the Target, in what order, the spacing between aircraft,
and fanning if required.

The Escape.

1?. When a ground target is attacked the formation is usually scattered to some
degree and thought must be given to the problem of taking the formation away
from the target area as a mutually supporting fighting unit.

Recovery.

13. The method of recovery will depend upon the enemy fighter force and the
distance that the formation has to recover to base. Fuel must be allowed for
combat purposes, the prime object being to return to the friendly side of the
bomb - line. If fuel, ammunition and situation is favourable, then the
leader can consider offensive combat with the enemy remembering that under these
conditions a fighter cover would be provided where possible.

Fuel.

14. The Bingo fuel state must be considered keeping in mind the high fuel
consumption at full power low down, the possibility of being engaged in combat,
the distance to recover to base and the altitude.

Tactics.

15. The possibility of the formation being forced to fight at any time during
the flight cannot be ignored and consideration must be given to the following
problems of fighting in the lower levels.

     (a) Support both between and within the pairs.

     (b) Clear and concise use of the R/T.

     (c) Responsibility of formation members. Searching scanning and reporting.

     (d) Fighting with three.

     (e) Selection of speeds.

     (f) Rate And radius of turn.

     (g) Air Gunnery, manoeuvring and sight handling at high G'.

                                                              /Missed

                                RESTRICTED.
