Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever
                                    RESTRICTED. Page 4

Duties of No. 2.

We have discussed the first basic problem which faces No. 2's starting
the business of air combat.

We want the No. 2 to do three things

          1. Stick

          2. Search

          3. Report.

     1. Sticking.

Discussed in previous two pages. Until the No. 2 can stay with the No. 1.
under all conditions, the pair of A/C has not got maximum flexibility.

     2. Search.

Most of us tend to peer vacantly out of the office, and imagine we are
     conducting a very industrious search.

          (a) Focus

          (b) Correct scanning

          (c) Area of responsibility.

      (a) Use clouds - anything on distant horizon to keep eyes out so they
can look. Immediately your eyes move from focus they start coming in.

      (b) Teach them to scan correctly. Vertically thru. the horizon. Keep
      eyes moving.

      (c) Allocate areas of responsibility.

       3. Report.

Reporting must be clear, concise and correct: -

                 Mission 0 2 B - left - 9 o'clock - level - two miles -
                 two MIG 17's - closing.

We have discussed some of the problems of a specialist of the team -
The No. 2. Remember his job is vital and it is a difficult job.

Let Us Look at the No. 1.

1. Vast amount of responsibility

2. His is the key job of assessing the situation quickly and accurately.

3. Must always exercise consideration for his formation.

4. Must be aware of the problems experienced by his No. 2.

                                                           /Points
