This photograph was taken against the instructions of the Commissar who was accompanying
us and without him knowing. It is typical of what was to be seen behind the facade of buildings in
the main streets of East Berlin.

In it one can just make out the shells of buildings. The circular object is the top end of an air
raid bunker toppled on its side by demolition explosives. To its right is another, square, blown up
bunker. We were told that this stood at, or close to, the site of the Reichs Chancellery and that of
Hitler's underground bunker. Some new buildings are in the distance to the right of the picture.
