No. 122 Wing RAF Jever

                          FORMATION PROCEDURES.	
Start-up.

1.   Start up on a briefed time or on a signal from the formation leader, this
is to be a circular motion of the hand above the head.

2.   The leader is to brief the radio channels to be checked.  Both boxes
are to be checked and the approach frequency is to be one of the channels.
The leader is to cell for an R/T check on the pre-briefed channels thus:-

     Leader  -  "Missions 01 and 02, CHECK IN".

     No. 2.  -  " 01 B".

     No. 3.  -  " 02 A".

     No. 4.  -  " 02 B".

     Leader  -  " 01 and 02 ALL FIVES".

3.   The leader is then to call for taxy clearance.

Taxy.

4.   Taxy on alternate sides of the perimeter track, leader on the left, with
a safe distance between aircraft.

Line-up and Take-Off.

5.   The line up is illustrated below. The leader is on the extreme left with
his wingman we11 forward almost to the abreast position.  No. 2 should have his
port wingtip on the centre line.  No. 3 should get well up between No. 1 and 2
with No. 4 on the extreme right.  In this position the leader will have no
difficulty in seeing No. 4.  If another section are in company they will line
up behind in the identical manner but spaced back 100 yards to avoid jet blast.

6.   The leader say wish to alter the type of climb because of a change in
weather.   In this case he will give notification over the R/T before take-off.

7.   Run up to 6800 r.p.m. and roll at the briefed intervals.   The lead pair
are to pull high after take-off and the second pair stay low to avoid slip stream.

Clear Weather Climb.

8.   The signal to roll for a clear weather climb will be a raised hand brought
smartly down in a chopping motion and releasing brakes.

9.   No. 3 will time 5 seconds as soon as the leader's wheels move and release
brakes.

10.   Wingmen will move out into battle formation when safely airborne.

11.   Formation leaders should initiate a turn shortly after airborne to allow
sub-sections to catch up.   7750 r.p.m. is the power to be used on clear weather
climbs.
