Standard Operational Procedures for
No. 122 Wing RAF Jever

RESTRICTED

SECTION I

INDIVIDUAL SYLLABUS FLYING

General.

1.   Because of the political situation and the requirements of Saceurs Alert
system, all squadron aircraft which you may fly during your tour at Jever will
be fully armed with operational ammunition.   The only exception to this will
be when you fly on an air to ground sortie, when the operational ammunition
is replaced by ball ammunition.   Therefore on every sortie you must take extra
care to ensure that all the armament safety precautions are complied with.

Armament Safety Precautions.

2.   Pilots are to adopt the following before and after flight procedure when
operating Hunter and Swift aircraft with guns loaded: -

          (a)  Before Starting.   On entering the cockpit the pilot is to: -

                 (i)   Check gun master/isolation switch off and locked off.
(ii)   Check trigger guard is safe and is secured with split pin.
(iii)   Chock butt test switch is off.
                 (iv)   Inform armourers accordingly.

          (b)   The aircraft is not to be started until the armourer reports that:-

                 (i)   The Gun Package lead is plugged in.
(ii)   The access panel is locked.

          (c)   In Flight.   During cine exercises only the camera button is to be used.

          (d)   After landing.   After landing from a firing sortie, the pilot is to taxi
to the safety area and stop the engine.   He is then to:-

                 (i)   Check gun master/isolation switch off and locked off.
(ii)   Check trigger guard is up and is secured with split pin
(iii)   Check butt test switch is off.
                 (iv)   Inform armourers accordingly.
                 (v)   Remain with aircraft until the aircraft is made safe.

Start-up and Taxying.

3.   Pilots are responsible for ensuring that a fire extinguisher is available
and that the area behind and below them is clear of objects and fuel before
starting.   After carrying out all the relevant post-start checks contained in the
relative pilots' notes, they are invariably to check two-way contact on both
boxes on channels Alpha and Kilo.   If either box does not give satisfactory two-
way communication, the sortie is to be abandoned.

4.   D.M.E. is to be selected to stand-by to allow it to warm up while taxying
to take-off point.   Considerable movement of M.T. is inevitable on the A.S.Ps.
at Jever.   Extreme caution and slow taxying speeds are therefore a vital requirement
on this airfield, when leaving or entering A.S.Ps.   If take-off clearance is not
received by R/T near the threshold of the runway, pilots are to return to
dispersal by the most expeditious route, as a failure to receive this permission
indicates doubtful R/T.
