"This is a significant find in an area that has previously been viewed as having little geological potential," said Preston Chiaro, chief executive of Rio Tinto Energy & Minerals.   "We are currently planning the next phase of the project by beginning our pre-feasibility studies," he added.   Preliminary studies indicate that up to 40% of the coal may be suitable for use in a power station.   The companies involved, Chapudi Coal (in which Rio holds a 70% interest) and Kwezi Mining (in which Rio has a 49% interest), are in talks with Eskom, which generates 95% of the electricity used in South Africa, and independent power providers.   "The project's potential to produce thermal coal for electricity generation comes at a time when South Africa needs to rapidly increase its generating capacity," said Rio
