Civilian Gliding Club Friesland/Jever - Early 1957.   Many of us will remember the gliding club that used the airfield on most weekends.   Walter Kuntzsch, together with a few other air-minded enthusiasts, founded the club at Jever in 1951 and he became president a few years later.   Kuntzsch was born near Dresden were he made his first glider flight at the age of 16.   In WW II he flew Junkers Ju 52s and later was a civilian employee on the Station.   A used SG38 glider was purchased in 1954 which was named 'Maria' - the last Regent of Jever town (Maria of Jever).   Around 1958 the club was able to work closely with the RAF Jever Gliding Club which proved to be very beneficial for both clubs.   The closure of the station in 1960/61 put an end to all gliding activities at Jever.   Being only a single-seater the SG38 had only a restricted C of A which was not helpful.   The Grunau Baby was only on loan to the club and so was returned to its owner.   The civilian club moved over to the Marianseal Airport around 1960 before finally amalgamating with the Flying Club Waterkant - Zetel.   (Thanks to Maurice Parker)
