RAF Jever MT Section - Aug55.   L to R: Eric Carter, Mick Pummel, Curtis (despatch rider), Herbert Frost, Unknown and Unknown.   (Ken Senar tells me that he believes the vehicle that they are standing in front of is a Ford Koln bus.   When he was a Fighter Controller at Borgentreich (Click to see.)they used to travel between the domestic site and the radar bunker in these buses.   It was a very hilly area and he recalls that in hot weather the Koln would suffer from fuel starvation so the drivers would remove the covers to the engine, which was mounted alongside their driver's seat, and also the air filter on the carburettor.   When the bus started to falter on the hills the driver would reach for a coke bottle of neat petrol and pour some into the open intake to the carburetrtor - thus restoring power!   I hate to think what 'elf & safety would think about that today!)   (Thanks to Herbert Frost.)
