"Get settled in".

1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesMy room was on the first floor of a recently built, two storey, ochre-rendered block, No.163, situated a short walk away beyond the tennis courts and lawns from the back of the main Mess building.
1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesOn entering I set down my cases and kit bag, stripped off my greatcoat, and took stock. I couldn't see any other buildings from my window because of the dense pine forest in which almost the entire Jever domestic site was built. 1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesMy 11' x 15' room, one of 12 on each floor, was at the rear of the block and looked out on to the pine trees about 5 yards away at most. There was a bed, bedside cabinet, a patterned bedside mat, bookcase, writing-table, chest of drawers, and a wardrobe. There was also a wash-basin with hot and cold taps and a mirror above, on the left just inside the door. The walls were painted an off-white shade but were otherwise bare. Pretty curtains and a similar valance dressed the double framed, double-glazed, window. The outer frame opened outwards and the inner, inwards; a feature which foretold of hard winters. It was inviting enough, and was to be my home for the next two and a half years. Toilets and bathrooms were in the centre-rear of the block on each floor, adjacent to the batwomen's ironing rooms. All the floors were highly polished and brown in colour.1 1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesstationpic039.jpg, 14000 bytes

1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesThe duty batwoman that evening Frau Pinnau who, as it happened, was to be my own batwoman and who also tended to the needs of three or four other Officers. She spoke only broken English and was of helpful disposition. My first priority was to wash and freshen myself up ready for dinner. Serious unpacking would follow later in the evening in preparation for whatever would befall me the next day, Monday.

1 I must add that my room was big enough for a second bed and, on occasion, during major NATO exercises another bed was moved in so as to accommodate another Officer for the period of his stay. This happened infrequently.
