Not far from the Officers Mess one can still find this memorial.   I recall standing in front of it some 50 years ago trying to work out what it was for.   The inscription reads as follows: "In memory of the first Commander of Jever Aerodrome Oberstleutnant Kuno von Rosen".   Oberstleutnant von Rosen died in 1941 from injuries received in a car accident the year before.   If one looks closely one will notice that the swastika that is normally to be found underneath the eagle has been removed, most probably because public display of this emblem is not allowed in Germany.   Web Master was puzzled why Hauptmann (Captain) Mettig is usually credited with being the first commander of Upjever Airfield and yet von Rosen has this memorial.   It would seem that Mettig was in charge whilst Jever was being built but Major Kuno von Rosen was the first Operational Commandant of both Upjever airfield and the surrounding Jever district.   (Thanks to Maurice Parker and photo of Major von Rosen from Page 84 of Herr Jurgen Zaph's excellent book on Jever.
