Picture Caption: A look in the repair and maintenance depot in Upjever Aerodrome

40 Years a part of the Aerodrome.

Changing History of the German Air Force Repair Hangar In Upjever-Anniversary Celebration during a Family Day on the 8th June 2007.

The main function of the Hangar has not changed although it has had changing names.

From the Jever/Friesland Newspaper 3Mar07.   Schortens/Upjever.   The changing History of the "LIG 21" at the Standort Schortens started on the 25th February 1967 when the 1 Squadron of the German Supply Regiment 7 was moved from Westerland / Sylt to Upjever and one day later the name was changed to 10 Squadron and part of the Supply Regiment 6 at that time in Oldenburg.

This was not to be the last changing of the name, on the 1 April 1970 it was changed to Feldwerft F-104 and on the 1 September 1973, Feldwerft F-4F, in January 1982 it was changed to Luftwaffenwerft 62 and remained so for the longest time, on the 1 July 2002 was the last change to Luftwaffeninstandshaltungsgruppe 21 (Repair and Maintenance Workshop) LIG 21.

The main function in this long time has not changed, this being the repair, maintenance and improvements to Aircraft.   It started with the F-104 Starfighter, next was the RF-4E Phantom II for Reconnaissance, then the F-4F Phantom II as Fighter, and then in the last years the Workshop has taken over more functions, due to the reorganising of the Bundeswehr.   Since 2005 scrapping and saving the expensive parts from the Tornado Bombers and since January 2006 it is the expert scrapping of the Phantom II Fighter to recover the usable spare parts.   Since 2004 the Transport Helicopter TYP-CH-53G will be re-painted and conservation carried out.

Over the years. the exceptional reputation of the LIG 21 in Aircraft Technique, specially in Metal and Surface Craftsmanship. is renown in the whole of the Bundeswehr (German Forces).

At present the 450 people, Military and Civilian here are from the neighbouring towns and villages, some of them started as a trainee 15 years ago, by the LIG 21, and since the Bomber Squadron 38 "Friesland" was closed down, some of them moved to the Station Administration to be able to stay here.   This shows the deep roots there is between the Unit and the Region and one can sometimes meet someone outside the Aircraft Security Area , who has been a part of the LIG for more than 32 years.   At the Jever Altstadtfest you can meet them selling Tombola tickets for Charity.
