Report on a Visit to German Air Force Jever by Mick Ryan, Chris Stone, Gunter Kipp and Maurice Parker
on Tuesday/Wednesday 16/17th August 2005

When we got back to the Officers' Mess after visiting Jever town, we met OTL Joachim Linke and Lt Robin Heidemann on the front steps.   We took them to dinner in the Officers' Mess as a thank you for looking after us so perfectly.   Although the Officers' Mess is officially closed for meals, the Camp Commandant arranged for some cooks to come over from the Airman's Mess to cook us a meal.   They also obtained some volunteers to act as waiters.   We dined in a paneled room behind the bar and underneath the room in which we had been briefed that morning.   The menu that was offered to us gave an extensive choice and was beautifully presented.   It was more like a professional restaurant than a closed Officers' Mess.   The six of us had a superb meal with excellent service.  The commandant apologised that he had to charge us the official GAF rates - €10 a head everything included!   As all the staff were volunteers we gave a good tip in gratitude.

The next morning we took some more photographs around the mess before leaving.   Oberleutnant Heidemann obtained two copies of Jurgen Zaph's latest book about Jever - "Upjever Airfield - Luftwaffe Presence in Friesland 1936-2004".   Chris and I each bought a copy.   [Click to see the advert for it under Books and Films].
