Firstly I should like to apologise for the events leading up to the cancellation of 11th January and I hope no-one was too inconvenienced.  Having booked personally and had confirmation in October I was somewhat disturbed to get no reply to my final check call in the Christmas week.  Eventually I had to travel down up to London only to ascertain from a worker on the site that the Clachan had changed hands before Christmas and was closed until February for refurbishment.  I just hope that, through a series of short notes, telephone calls and cascading calls, we managed to get the message to everyone.  I left my telephone number on the front door of the Clachan on the night but had no irate calls so hopefully that was the case.  My thanks to Peter without whose help it would have been a very different exercise.  As you have probably gathered from the heading, the Clachan has now been re-named "Serjeants".

However fellow Steamers will be pleased to know that refurbishment is now complete and I can confirm that our AGM is booked for 29 Mar 03 as provisionally targeted in the cancellation note.  Doors will be open from the earlier time of 1700 hrs - 2300 hrs and food from an improved menu will be served from 1900 hrs onwards.  Could I please urge you to come along if you can, the new management is not quite so informal as previously and were keen for a good attendance before accepting the booking.  It is amazing how their eyes glaze over with suspicion when one mentions the words "Jever Steam Laundry''.

Last years (02) event was one of our better attended functions with approximately forty in residence for the evening.  The Limpopo water flowed freely (but paid for) all evening and many agenda items were exchanged with fellow steamers.  The 'Golden Share' award went to Rodney Farley in recognition of his regular attendance over the years.  I think it was also a mark of gratitude to those on the ground who so often got us back in foul weather in time for opening hours.

Sad to relate that news has filtered through that in the weeks leading up to Christmas we have lost both Ian Weston and Ray Chapman - earlier bossman of "4" - from our company.

Contact details

Contact details remain unchanged as follows:

Ken Goodwin Auldcroft, Plud Street, Wedmore, Somerset BS28 4BE Tel: 01934 712228

Jeff Jeffrey 2 Hawkes End, Brampton, Huntingdon, Cambs. PE28 4TW Tel: 01480 454788

Finally, thank you for your letters and cards through the year - they will be in the "info folder" on the night for all to see.  We look forward to seeing you on the 29 Mar at Steaming time (1700 hrs).  For those who can't make it this year we should hopefully be reconvening at the same venue on Saturday 11 Jan 04.  As normal, all details will be subject to confirmation nearer the time.

Would you all please complete the attached attendance annex whether attending or not and let me have it soonest, thank you.

T.M.J.

P.S. Try to make it this year.

A quick reminder - JSL AGM 2003 voted to move event from January to March annually, hence next AGM (2004) being arranged for 20th March 2004 at Serjeants and not 11th January as previously mentioned. AGM report plus details to follow in the New Year.

A Merry Christmas to all.

"CLACHAN"

MITRE COURT OFF FLEET STREET (0207 936 2294)

(Tell the cabbie "Fleet Street, opposite Fetter Lane)

(Nearest tube is Temple)

The second Saturday in the New Year is 11th January and the news is that the AGM has been booked at the Clachan again - starting at 1700 hrs, an hour earlier than usual.  Pub food will be served during the evening and the place will be exclusive to us as before.

Last years meeting was well-attended by some 40-45 directors but accurate numbers are not available due to a certain amount of haziness which set in during the course of the evening.

Since last year two deaths have been notified, Wg. Cdr. Jock McElwain of Maidenhead and Ian Carr whose passing was noted in the British Airways Retired Staff Magazine.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Don't forget the earlier steaming time 1700 hrs.

Peter Baines

P.S. Jeff Jeffrey is unwell, but hopes to be better by the 11th January 2003.
