Yet again I find myself starting with an apology for another late submission - this time the reason is quite straightforward.  When I phoned a short while ago to confirm our standard booking for the second Saturday I learnt to my horror that the "Three Compasses" had not only changed hands but didn't even exist.  It has been gutted and turned into a 'bar' specifically designed for the younger generation to have a few heartstarters before they go clubbing.  It now trades under the name of "Mosko"; is bedecked with Soviet/Stalin murals and has bare floorboards throughout.  Not quite our scene I felt despite Ken and his souvenir cap from the Russian Air Force.

However, after a full day's recce in London I have managed to make arrangements for our function to be held in the "Clachan" which is a small, traditional pub off Fleet Street.  We can have it exclusively to ourselves and food and drink appear to be quite reasonable considering the area.  Should it prove less than satisfactory I will at least have ample time to sort out a replacement for the following year.  So, to summarise, this year's JSL reunion will be held on Sat 8th Jan 00 - doors open at 1800 hours and close at 23.00 hours.  I have been assured that strains of the Limpopo and dingleberry fall out will be no problem for the aforementioned hostelry.

Back to standard business.  Although I was unable to attend myself I gather from all accounts that last year's function went off very well with the numbers attending being well up.  The "Golden Share" went to Dougie Adamson in recognition of his regular attendance over the years and I have to thank Dougie and Ian Craig for providing the photographic coverage and recording all the evidence which may be used, as they say, at some later date.

Contacts remain as below but please note that, as I retired in September 99, my service contact details at RAF Innsworth no longer apply:-

Ken Goodwin Auldcroft, Plud Street, Wedmore, Somerset BS28 4BE Tel: 01934 712228

Jeff Jeffrey 2 Hawkes End, Brampton, Huntingdon, Cambs.PE18 8TW Tel: 01480 454788

Sad to relate that during the year news has filtered through that certain of our members have passed away - B.Shrubsole died in 1995 and J.R.Pratt died in 1998.

Now for the 'Millenium Meet' which I touched on in my last letter to you.  What I have in mind is a weekend in May/June based on the Brampton Park Officers' Mess, Huntingdon.  Friday evening would be an informal 'happy hour' type function - barrel of beer, ladies' drinks and handheld buffet supper.  Saturday evening would be a formal Ladies' Dinner Night with a gentle (60/70s) Disco and drinks to follow.  Saturday morning and afternoon and Sunday would be entirely free to do your own thing in the local area.  There are a number of aviation museums, ex R.A.F. stations etc., which I am sure will hold a real interest to most of you.  Accommodation, if required would be based on either a Swallow Hotel or a Travel Inn both of which are only 2 miles away from the Mess and, if required, shuttle transport could be organised.  Clearly the viability of such an event will depend on the numbers interested and I will need to know these before approaching RAF Brampton.  I would, therefore, be grateful if you could all complete the attached questionnaire and return it to me.

Finally, may I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year/Millenium.  So, providing you are not still ensconced on some South Pacific, east-facing beach adjacent to a convenient kink in the dateline, I look forward to seeing you at Steaming Time - 1800 hours.  If you happen to know of anyone who could perhaps miss out on the revised venue could I please ask you to let them know.

For those not able to make it in the New Millenium, next year (01) will be on 6th Jan, hopefully the same place - TBC - look forward to seeing you there. TMJ P.S. As always we are indebted to Peter Baines who continues to provide us with such an excellent photocopying and postage facility. Many thanks, Peter.
